Stevens 44 1/2 with single set trigger
Jun 15th, 2022 at 4:58pm
Print Post
Just received a 44 1/2 with a single set trigger. Not an expert on  Stevens but do not recall anything about single set trigger.
Adjustment screw on rear of trigger and push forward to set.

Factory, modification, or after market?
Thanks
Carney

Factory, an extra as Stevens called the available options. Single set triggers are somewhat scarce because they didn’t work very well and thus Stevens didn’t sell very many.

So after reading the posts, the $64K question remains. Is the improved version improved?

Thanks for that, SureShot.

I don't know whether the one I got in this 44 is improved or not, but it sure is a sweet trigger.  I think it's nicer than the DSTs I have.

Decided not to put a different barrel on it, so the original is at Dr. John Taylor's to be linered in the original 22LR.

Here’s a picture of the single set trigger parts from the Stevens #53 catalog, c1911.
In the same catalog it states that the single and double set triggers are not furnished on 44 rifles.
The trigger plate or removable lower tang on the 44 1/2, is basically the same as one from a standard single trigger other than the threaded hole for the knock off spring.

So, if an enterprising gunsmith drilled and tapped a single hole and bought the necessary parts from Stevens, could he convert a standard trigger to a single-set trigger?

Yes, I have done this with used parts so I would have matching serial numbers on my rifle.

Sure shot   Do you have an idea from the catalogs, when Stevens stopped making double set triggers available on the 44 model?

Undoubtedly, Sure shot or one of our Stevens experts will be able to narrow rkba2nd's question down even finer.  But several years ago much-missed Redsetter and I did our best on this Forum to create an accurate chronology of Stevens catalogs.  Included in that research was my original catalog No. 51 (the 136-page edition) with mailing envelope that we dated to late 1903.  That catalog states specifically that double set triggers are no longer available for Model 44 rifles.  That should get the ball rolling.

First of all I don’t consider myself an expert on Stevens, but I am a serious student. I have learned much from everyone on this site the last few years, thank you.
My #51 catalog reprint only mentions ideal rifles where it lists extras available for ideal rifles, not model numbers. My #52 catalog c1907-08 does list single set triggers and no double set triggers available for 44 model rifles, as in the picture of the catalog that I posted above. As I said above, the #53 catalog, c1911, says not furnished for either single or double set triggers for 44’s. My gut feeling is that soon after the 44 1/2 rifles were introduced, is more likely when they stopped offering double set triggers for the model 44. The #52 catalog c1907-08, also states that the model 44 rifle is now only offered in rimfire, and .25-20 and .32-20 centerfire cartridges.

Oops, further reading in my #51 catalog c1903-04, it specifically says that, under the description of #44 rifles, “This rifle will not be fitted with double set triggers.

Sure shot   thanks for your reply. I know that it is difficult to nail down dates based on serial numbers, but changes in availability of options can help, which is why I asked the question. I have a 45 model special order 44 with double sets, with no provision for barrel sights, and fitted with a Cummins scope. I have always pondered when it might have been made. Unfortunately we will never know definitively, but you have put me closer.
