Boring .43 Spanish to .50-70

I have a typical Remington export SRC in .43 Spanish with rough bore.  I have several .50-70 guns and plenty of brass.  Is there enough meat on the barrels of these carbines to have one bored out and chambered for .50-70?

Thanks.  What does Taylor charge?  I wonder if Bobby Hoyt could do it?

Mr Taylor is a bit pricey but take my word for it you get what you pay for in that kind of work. I as well as many others have seen his work and it is top notch. If you are serious in my opinion it would be money well spent.

I would think most any good gunsmith is going to charge around $500 +/- to put in a liner. TJs liner are excellent and they have had to increase prices like everyone else. A good finished (threaded & chambered) new barrel may only run a couple hundred more.

I had JES Reboring bore a Rolling Block with a 250 Savage barrel to 50-70.  They cut the chamber but don't fit extractors.  The 43 Spanish extractor might work ok.  My rifle shoots lights out and is 0.512/0.502 with a 26 twist.  Cost was around $350 as I remember.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

If you do rebore it, you might consider chambering it for the .50-45.  Its simply a shortened .50-70.  A lot more pleasant to shoot in a light carbine.  I have a put together m1867 Navy rolling block carbine in .50-45. It really fun to shoot.

Interesting idea.  I need to check case dimensions against .43 Spanish to see how it would come out.  Looking for rebore and chamber not a liner.

Even better - - chamber it for the 56-50 Spencer center fire, which is about the same as the 50-45  USN carbine round, but you can get ready made brass and dies.   I use the Lyman 515139, 350 grain  bullet in my 56-50 Peabody carbine and it is a joy to shoot.  My 50-70 New York rolling block carbine, as well as my 50-70 Sharps conversion,  is a lot rougher on my shoulder than the Peabody.

Bob Hoyt did a couple for me and his prices are very reasonable and turn-around time was quick.

I know y'all are trying to be helpful, but the OP says he has all the fixin's for the 50-70 in hand.

Dies in 50-45 might be expensive and trimming expensive and hard to find 50-70 brass seems counter productive.

just sayin'...

I guess you guys are tougher than I  Wink  Years ago I had a .50-70 converted Sharps carbine. That light carbine kicked like a mule with a full load of 2F and a 450gr bullet.  I find my .50-45 rolling block carbine much more pleasant to shoot. Loaded with 40gr of 2F and a 350gr bullet, it is plenty fun.  I use readily available .56-50 Spencer dies to load for it. The .56-50 Spencer is just a little shorter and Starline brass is available.  Both a good options.
