Another interesting thing at the range

Not as exciting as the pressure thing but more interesting.
I reloaded half a box of empties for my 32-20 and after seating all the bullets I started wondering what would the results be if I didn't follow up with the Lee Factory Crimp die as the other half of the box had been. Now there isn't much visible difference. I use just the lightest touch of the Lyman M die to get the plain base bullets started and the seating die seems to remove any trace oy any expansion from the M die. The factory crimp die is adjusted to just, and I emphasize just, smooth the end of the case. Common views might suggest that the uncrimped cases would be more uniform with just the neck tension and thus more accurate and others might say that crimped case would give a better powder burn and be more accurate unless the case lengths were unequal and cause variations in neck tension. I had the K10 Weaver on the rifle and was shooting at 100 yards and the wind was essentially still. Ideal conditions. I finished my testing of some new loads using H108 (turned out great!) and then turned to the other box with my standard 7 grains of 2400. I shot 5 crimped then 5 uncrimped and then repeated the 5 each. To cut to the chase, it was not even close. The uncrimped lost by a mile.

OK, one more thing. I was also testing my new Accurate mould that I had asked Tom make for my 38-55 Uberti. Now years ago when I first got the Uberti I went through nearly 1000 test rounds (primarily because of the original .379 barrel of the Uberti) before finally deciding on a 250 grain NEI bullet and 14.5 grains of SR4759. The Accurate bullet was also 250 grains and suitable for the Uberti so I just bracketed the 14.5 grain load by + or - .5 grain. I shot my standard and compared the 3 loads with the new bullets and the 14 grain load did a real number on my old load in the 10 shot groups at 100. Tom can make you a bullet to your specs and it will turn out to be to your specs.

Enjoyed what you had to say especially if I try this and that to see what might happen between the two.
There used to be a time when I wouldn't even make it out of the gate at range without having something else I had to try.
This took place for some 20+ years and the self knowledge gained when looking back was extremely rewarding.

Rich,
Go to Accurate molds. You can design a mold to your specs, with some limitations, and Tom will cut it on CNC equipment. It will be EXACTLY what you specified to his (3) tolerance brackets. Ive gotten molds delivered less than a week after I submitted the order. For quick experimentation, you cant beat Accurate!

Oneatatime,
Thanx for starting this thread. I may be the most guilty one here for accepting the “known” standards in this game. You have shown that bucking the system might just work. In the near future, I am going to do a couple builds that will focus on fixed ammo and test my machining capabilities to the max. I want to prove to myself if fixed can be as accurate as breech-seated. 35/30 Maynard and 32 Ideal will be the focus.
