The only reason, imho, that anybody shot rollers was that the rules were purposely designed to not allow DST's.  The roller design looks as if it would be very difficult to fit them on a commercial basis.  I can think of no other reason to not see them today.

It is similar to the current notion why HD makes Sportsters; keeps women off Big Twins.   Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

It's a joke people, lighten up!

I thought the Big Twins were for overweight wannabe posers. You know the same  kind of guys that buy  Sharps rifles so they can tell their friends but don't know how to shoot them.
... image and ownership is more important than actually understanding how to use something.

that's what you get for assuming/doing your own thinking.
Big Twin HDs were two years back ordered when HD dealers had every model and color option Sporties sitting in rows on the showroom floor.

Shiloh 74's are a year or more back ordered today, and no real factory offers Rollers except the Italians.  CPA has probably built more DST rifles than the entire output of all the Roller builders.  There's nothing wrong with Rollers, they are just really limited in options.  I have never actually held one with DST's, or a 45-120 or 50-140 in my hands.

Somebody should post pictures of those.

thanks,

Rich

I know of a German shooter who was using a 45-120 RB rifle for long range competition.  If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't have believed it.  He shot quite well too...

Rich,
Here are a couple pictures of 6 of my "Lone Star" Rolling Block Rifles. The second one from the top is  fitted with double-set triggers (by Dave Higginbotham).
Dave's workmanship was every bit as good as Shiloh Sharps. Wonderful Rifles!!

The main reason you see so few DST Rolling Block Sporting Rifles is because Remington didn't build them. They instead chose to only do SST Rollers, and the SST on them works extremely well on originals I own.
The conversions done to DST can often work well also, but depends on who did them. I'd assume any that Lonestar built would be top of the line conversions.

My favorite black powder rifle is my 40-65 Remington roller. I also have a Pedersoli Sharps in 45-70 and two High Walls in 38-55.

For those of you who might be interested in acquiring one of the few Lone Star Rifles, Rock Island Auction has one in their Aug 10th auction.   catalog #2026  lot # 580
It is a .38-55 with Soule sight in Schuetzen configuration.
The company's estimated value is low.

I'd take that crummy old Sharps off of your hands.  From your experience I'd guess it ain't worth much to you.

The records seem to indicate that of the 12 team members, six each were armed with Sharps and rollers.  A single set trigger would not have been legal under the rules.  Borchardts and the 1877 were both allowed.  It is a shame that the records I have had access to do not show what rifle each team member was using.

Rich, there are some written descriptions of what guns team members shot in the 1874 Creedmoor matches. Not sure there are for all of the members though. Of course LL Hepburn shot a Rolling Block since he worked for Remington and built all the team rifles. GW Yale worked for Sharps and shot a Sharps. Fulton, Bodine, both shot Remingtons. Gildesleeve, Dakin, shot Sharps. Wingate was the Captain, but I don't have info on what he shot? Maybe as Captain he didn't compete, but simply ran the team?
There weren't 12 members, but actually 7 members, and 2 reserve members. That would likely be 6 shooters and Captain Wingate, plus the two reserve shooters.
The twelve shooters would be 6 Americans, and 6 Irish.

1974 team:
Team Captain: Gen. G.W. Wingate.
Brig. Gen. Thomas F. Dakin
Col. John Bodine
Lt. C. H.A. Gildersleeve
Lieut. H. Fulton
L.L. Hepburn
G.W. Yale
Col. E.S. Sanford (reserve)
I.T.B. Collins (reserve)
