Lone Star Rifle Company .45-90 Rolling Block

Print Post
I have recently acquired what would seem to be a special order (weren't they all?) Lone Star Rifle Company rolling block in .45-90.  It has a heavy 34" barrel that is 1 1/16" across flats.  Weighs north of 12 lbs.  The rifle is as new and appears to have never been shot, other than proofing at Lone Star.  I am assuming that it was intended to be a long-range silhouette rifle, given its specs. I am needing to put a value on this rifle.  I can find no comparables. Standard rifles from Lone Star go from the mid $2Ks well into the $3Ks.  Based on a Shiloh Sharps in a similar configuration (1874 Quigley), I am thinking $3500-$3800.  Is that off the mark? Obviously, there will be no more made.

Appears to be a hunting rifle. That will effect value since it has no target sights, a crescent butt and straight grip. Nice looking rifle.

I dunno.  Pretty heavy to tote around, even on a horse.  And the Quigley Sharps has a crescent buttplate and straight grip.

Hunting rifles were heavy back then. Game was so plentiful they didn't have to carry a rifle very far. A horse wouldn't notice.

The rifle you pictured is a hunting rifle. Install target sights on it and it will be a hunting rifle with target sights.

Quigley Down Under was a movie.

List it for 4500,00, Rich will be along to buy it.   Smiley

There’s a Lone Star Roller in 50-70 for sale on GB. Has a MVA scope on it. Looks to be somewhat similar to the OP’s photo.  Opening bid amount is $4,899.00 (or something close to that).
I suppose since they are no longer being made, the prices are increasing.  I bought a LS Target Model with DST in 38-55 for less than $3K with MVA sights a few years ago.  Seems at the time, they were trading for $2,500+/- depending on features.
There’s also a Remington RB-97 Roller there for $2,400.00.  Looks to be an early one.  I always thought these were a good value, and not a repro  Wink

My shooting buddy tells me "friends don't let friends buy Rollers....".

Sharps rifles killed buffalo/bison by the millions.  Lots more pictures of buffalo hunters carrying Sharps than Rollers.
Besides, they do not have enough triggers, imho.  I like the 2 oz +/- DST triggers on my Shilohs.

Rollers are safe from me.

I owned Lone Star #001 for a while. Somebody here owns it now, I don't recall who. It was an exceptional gun in 45-90.

Anyone know if the Lone Star records are available?  Does Higginbotham's widow maintain them or did she transfer them to someone else to make available?

This rifle is for sale, incidentally.  I just do not have the requisite number of posts here to list in classifieds.  I have it on Gunbroker, but prefer to avoid their fees whenever possible.

From what I have read on one or two other shooting sites, the tooling, parts, any records, etc., have been left dormant. From what I read, supposedly Dave’s widow put the shop, tools, etc., up for sale, but found no buyers as there was some type of religious connection in the terms of the sale. I was unsuccessful when I tried to get a replacement lower tang wood screw for the Lone Star I formerly owned. She said she had no idea where the parts were in the shop or what the parts were for.

Really a shame that no one could buy Lone Star and  restart production. Dave built a fine rifle and his workmanship was outstanding. From what Dave told me at a SHOT Show, he purposely kept production low to keep quality high.

I can respect people's religious beliefs, but that is just weird.  And a crying shame Cry.

I own both, smithed on both and used both in competition. The Sharps sits in the safe.

By 1876 only two members of the International team were using Sharps rifles, the rest were using rolling blocks.

The only reason, imho, that anybody shot rollers was that the rules were purposely designed to not allow DST's.  The roller design looks as if it would be very difficult to fit them on a commercial basis.  I can think of no other reason to not see them today.

It is similar to the current notion why HD makes Sportsters; keeps women off Big Twins.   Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

Those were in fact part of the rules.

Factory made rolling blocks could be had with single set triggers.  Some had double sets but they were all custom.
I prefer the plain trigger in the rolling block to double sets in the Sharps for target shooting or shooting buffalo.

My Sharps is a backup gun or loaner.

When I purchased to back room from Lone Star I acquired the FFL records for that business.  All of those serial numbers, calibers etc were listed here on another post (thread?)
