Ear plugs

Muffs don't work for me and solid ear plugs don't allow me to hear what I need to hear. Trying to locate plugs that allow normal hearing but block out loud noise. I had a set when I was a kid. The rubber part went in the ear and had aluminium thingamabobbers on them. What are they called?

I am not sure about this, would they have been called sonic ear valves?

Yikes! Sonic Ear Valves. Haven’t heard about those in years. I think they were discontinued due to not providing much in the way of hearing protection. I remember using them while in the BSA in the 60’s. Had a pair during my ML days but they were useless shooting Service Rifles.
I know you didn’t want muffs, but the style with hearing assist work pretty good blocking sound and allowing conversations to be heard.
I wear hearing aids and find the muffs are better, but choose not to wear them off the range
Mike.

I use and like the Walkers ear buds. They use #10 hearing aid batteries.

Spent a large part of my life around noisy machinery (chainsaws), was a drag racer and still a Target shooter. As you, I don't really care for muffs.
Best (by far) ear plugs I've found are 3M "Pistonz". Nascar promotional things - look like a piston and connecting rod. Connecting rod makes them easy to get out. They are more expensive than others but they give me by far the best noise reduction. I've always got a pair or 2 in my pocket, use them over and over again (wife cringes).
Best noise reduction is with a "fresh" set.
I buy them at my local auto parts store.

I love ear muffs and I have a pair but they get it the way when shooting. Using earplugs I can't hear anything. Recently missed targets because I couldn't hear my spotter and didn't have time to keep saying, what? What?
Thought I'd try the Sonic lls. I hear perty good but I'm very tone deaf so I hear some words but not others or parts of words. It's a real PITA.
I'm sure I'm not the only shooter here with the problem.

I felt my reign had lasted long enough. Now I'm a laid back young guy who doesn't care what people think of the way he wears his derby.

An audiologist can get ones that are custom fit to your ears and provide more than 25db reduction in sound.
Not inexpensive.

Not cheap but still could be an option.
