Taken into custody at the Denver Show

I was making an unplanned trip at the show (old bladders, you know), when I spied a rifle that I came back to for a better look. Three things generally attract me to a rifle: decent wood; unusual action; and, lots of scratches on the metal (some folks call this engraving, I believe). So, check, check, and check. The markings tell the tale. It is a German Heeren (one of my favorite actions) rifle finished by Stiegele in Munich. It was made and first proofed in Suhl in March of 1930. It was in 7x57R for 154 grain bullets. In August of 1940 (yup, that's during WWII) it went back to Suhl to be rechambered to 7x65R and received its reproofed mark. Now, the 7x65R is an entirely different animal than the 7x57R and can approach 7mm Rem Mag ballistics. I'm guessing it was shortly after this that it received its wrist reinforcement. Anyway, I now have it in protective custody. With brass in hand and dies arriving shortly. For once with my odd caliber choices, brass is easily available and I even had my choice of Norma or Lapua. I even had a choice of dies between RCBS and Hornady. Jacketed bullets are kind of scarce (I had a few from the old days) but I have a lot of cast bullets that are even all lubed and gas checked. We'll see how it turns out. Oh, that is a close coupled set trigger and the lever on the right side is a safety.

I presume that the rifle action opens by depressing the "lever"
in the front of the trigger guard, and then lowering the TG  from the front????
I would love to see a PIC of the rifle action opened.
That would explain more how it "works"
thanks

I remember when I was a little kid in Germany during the war I saw guns on the ground like that in the town square on a pile and a American Tank running back and forth over then and set on fire.
Beautiful rifle you latched on to.

Arnie, here are some open action pics. The action goes to full cock when opened all the way. The first two pics show the left and right sides of it at full cock. The third pic shows what it looks like when the set trigger is set. To clarify more, as you might figure out from the first pic, the blued piece that is engaged with the trigger and disappears up into the receiver is the hammer. In the second and third pics the heavy curved piece that is just poking out of the bottom front of the receiver is an extension of the breech block.

IIRC, these actions are or were recently made someplace in Canada, maybe BC.  Does anybody else remember anything like that?

At least into the 1960s, They were made by Glaser in Zurich, Switzerland. These are easy to spot as they have a longer front on the receiver to accept a longer barrel shank. Like this one: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
And here's one, contemporary with mine that is marked on the receiver as having been made by Kerner in Suhl.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
This is probably the maker of my action but the area of the receiver that was so marked has been covered by engraving.
While we are at it, here's the cute little brother of mine which will be happy to have a relative to share the safe with. It is the original Nagel und Mentz and is in 6.5x58R Sauer.

No, a Hagn isn't a Heeren.  Look here instead: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links).

Martin told me a few years back that he
had done about a dozen Heerens up for BP Shooters, so some came out of his shop.

Well, I just got out the old loupe and found some good light and had a close inspection of the area on top of the receiver that was so clearly marked Kerner in one of those links. No Kerner to be found, but in fine print disguised by the engraving there was a Max Heym. Off to the German Hunting Gun site and found "Max Heym who specialized in making single shot rifles using the Heeren action". Also there was this ad, so the maker is solved.

Here's a loaded round, Dusty, next to a 30-40. The whole rifle will have to wait until my smith finishes improving the scope mounts.
