The CORRECT case length for your .38-50 Rem Hep is what fits YOUR particular rifle chamber. Do a Cerrosafe cast to determine what that length needs to be. If you have to trim cartridge cases anyway, might as well trim them to fit your rifle chamber perfectly IMO.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

As Randy says, by all means, measure the chamber.

Like mentioned, make a cast.
If you don't have cherrosafe just melt down a candle and use it. It will work just fine for that job. Just put a light coating of oil in the chamber and bore and push a tight patch to th.e length you want and pour the wax in and let it get cool

Thanks guys, we've had a Chamber cast prior to purchase. All good.
Cast shows Chamber from mouth to free bore of 2.300" with a diameter of.3985"
Freebore length of .260".  Tapered from .3985" - .378". Groove diameter .375", bore diameter .368"
So. My existing cases are between 2.285" and 2.297". I'll trim what I can to 2.290" and wait and see if any of the shorter ones stretch a bit.
Had a good trial this morning.
2 different loads of Swiss with the same GG seated in the case.
After previously trying 55.0 grn with about .050" compression I went up a bit to.......
57.0 grn with .100" compression.
58.0 grn with .100" compression.
20:1 Steve Brooks tapered bullet, which pushes easily into the Grooves with the thumb.
First 5 shots went wierdly wild, and didn't carry on with that load.
The first 7 of the 58.0 grn load went into a tight 1" group with one dropping low.
Very happy.
