Picked up a  44 WCF Low Wall the other day, its manufacturers details and calibre markings are both on the top  of the (hex) barrel,  whereas all the  others I have  the markings are on  the left hand side of the bbl. This  ones  serial no.is 78,049, whereas all  the  others have serial nos. above 100,000. Is this normal? thank you,  d.

Your "hex" barrel is extremely rare!!!   Nearly every rifle I have ever seen has had an octagonal barrel.  That's 8 flats.   Your "hex" barrel  with only 6 sides has got to be maybe one of a kind.

Most Winchester 1885 Mfg and caliber details are on the top of the barrel.  In later years it’s not uncommon to see that info at the 45 degree flat left of the top flat.   I suspect this was done so that the Winchester roll stamp and caliber marking didn’t get mangled if a scope were installed.
