38/50. BP loads.

Well I found myself a lovely 38/50 Low wall, fitted with a 1:12 Ron Snover barrel. Previous owner is on here from time to time, and it shot very well for him, Paper patched. 😁.
At this stage I want to shoot GG bullets, I have 2 very good molds from a Pedersoli High wall 1:12 that I shot succesfully 6 years ago, and a new Base band on its way.
Is there anything I should know about the 5 groove Snover barrel ?  Do they like harder or softer bullets etc. ?
Cheers D R.

I know nothing worth anything about a snover barrel but I think the first things I would check is to see if the chamber is cut large enough to accept a GG bullet.
If it does, try some 30-1, 20-1 and 16-1 alloys and see if there is a lot of difference in how they shoot.

DR,
I would go with a bullet about 1.4" long for the 12 twist.
Should weigh about 340-345 gr. And, go with the 16+1 alloy to avoid setback of the ogive.
I and several others with 38-50s are using Swiss 1.5 to good effect.  I believe Rick Moritz uses 3F Swiss in his very good shooting 38-50.
Charge weight depends on seating depth of the bullets you
decide on. The Swiss Likes about 0.050 to 0.100" compression.
We find one 0.060" LDPE wad works well. For greasers, use a disc of newsprint between the LDPE wad and the base of the bullet.
My own load in my 10 twist  is with a 1.46"-360 gr DDEPP bullet that seats in the case about
0.100" or so.  Charge wt is 67 gr of an old very dense Swiss 1.5 or 64gr of a newer lot.

Thanks for that.
I have already noticed a tightening of the group by changinging from 30:1 to 20:1, so 16 will be next.
Arnie, why the news print disc, is it to stop the LDPE wad from sticking. ??
My new Breach seating mold (Base band) is .002" over bore diameter and the .130" wide Base is .002 over groove diameter. The chamber cast shows .368" and .375".... 👍🇦🇺

DR,
Yes, the newsprint disc over LDPE is to reduce chances of the LDPE wad from sticking to the gg bullet.

I would check the twist, when Ron helped me build my Hepburn he could only make 1-13 tw barrels in 38 cal, reason why mine is a 1-12 Shilen,Ron installed the barrel and chambered the action for me, if Ron cut the chamber I would make a casting, just because..

I shoot a 360 grain Paul Jones/Dan Theodore micro groove bullet in my 13 twist 38-50.

MB,
Yes, the newsprint could remain stuck on the base of the bullet if a person does not get all the lube off the base.
But, that newsprint disc weighs less than a Tenth of a grain,
and so should not cause any flyers as compared to the LDPE wad

Thanks, I'll have to check it. I'm only going on what I was told. 👍

Regarding wads sticking to bullets....
I see literally hundreds of Wads, Veg, drink coaster and LDPE, lying on the 100 yd Range at anything upto 50 yds. Most seem to make it about 20 yds. Not sure how far one would travel without the bullet in front so they obviously stick. ??

Hi Sam, yes there have been two Chamber casts taken over the years. All good. The rifle was built here in Oz for 200 yd Shutzen Ring Target competition back in 1979. 👍🇦🇺

Starting to have some real fun with this rifle now.
It will shoot very well once I reduce the fliers. I think at this stage the fliers are just my inability to reload the cases consistantly. Still looking for the right charge weight / compression size / wiping procedure, so nearly there 🤣😂🤣😂.

Wondering what Case length others are useing ? .
Some have said 2.00" while others say around 2.200" - 2.227".  The cases (WW) that came with the rifle are all well over that, 2.285" - 2.295". ?

Are WW prone to stretching, and eventually seperating ???
Thanks all. 👍🇦🇺

I would do a chamber cast to determine case length rather than rely on what any of us are using.  There are probably some variance in length based on who designed the reamer and where they got their info from.
