palm rest with short staff?

I have several palm rests of the type sold by MVA and CPA, with the collet adjustment. However, I need one with a staff about half the standard length. does anyone make one?
I have considered shortening one of the staffs on the ones that I have, by extending the threads, cutting off  one or two inches, and putting a bevel on the end and cutting the longitudinal slot with a Dremel. Anybody had any success doing this?

CPA sells a short staff I have several.
