Sight setting.

I need 800 and 1000 yard sight settings for an original Remington Creedmoor long range rifle. Caliber is 44-77. Shooter will be using 500 + grain paper patched bullets.

Fat chance I might find someone with that information but I'm giving it try anyway.  No guessing please, I'm looking for someone who has that information written down in their range book.

Joe, I've checked my come ups for two different rifles and they're both within three minutes of one another. You will need about 99-102 minutes from your 200 yard setting to get to 800yds and 140-143 minutes to a thousand yards. That's with a velocity of around 1,290 feet per second and 34" barrels. These settings are with a 540 grain bullet . My 45-70 with a 520 grain bullet and a 30 inch barrel needs 135 minutes to make it to 1000 yards from the 200-yard setting I don't think anybody's going to get closer than that but you should be close enough to see the impacts and get on paper from there. Good luck. Is he using the original sights?

Joe in my 44-77 shooting a 480 gr bullet at 1275 fps the come ups above the 200 setting for 800 is 84pts on the staff, 900 is another 17, and 1000 is 21 more.

Yes original sights but I forgot that his front sight is a Hepburn sight. I believe it is taller than what was normal on a Creedmoor.  Not sure about that.

Did the original tang sights use the same system of measurement as new sights like MVA?

If you split the difference between Don's come-ups and my come-ups you should be pretty close. I'm not sure what the markings are on an original Remington Creedmoor sight but I'm guessing it's probably in minutes of angle as my original Borchardt is. The height of the front sight will make no difference other than it will make him use up more of the rear sight to get to a thousand yards. If he doesn't have a 100 or 200 yards setting then it's just luck. The guys in the butts will have to listen if they can hear the impact behind the target or whistling over the top of them into the berm. Too bad Old Reliable isn't still with us as he shot an original 44-77 at the Quigley one year and would have sight settings at least to about eight hundred yards. Depending on where you shoot can make a big difference too. I shoot at around 950 ft elevation in Minnesota and Wisconsin but my come-ups in Phoenix are a bit less. Also at the Quigley (about 2700') my come- ups are quite a bit different at 600 for example as in Minnesota.

Yes the original Creedmoor sights used a similar vernier measurement system as the MVA sights.

Picture of the original long range Remington Hepburn Creedmoor Vernier sight.

However one inch of elevation appears to be 60 increments compared to 100 increments for a MVA sight.

Old-Win,

I have Old Reliable's .44-77 and you got me on paper at the Lodi match, Thank you.  Wink
I hope your doing well at Lodi today. I had to back out because of a compression fracture of my lower spine.

For my .44-77 I use a 510 gr PP bullet with a load of 85 gr of 1.5 Swiss. I have no idea how fast that load pushes that bullet.
My 200 yard setting is:
38 @ 200
120 @ 800
138 @ 900
158 @ 1000

Kurt

Well darn Kurt, you got to start slowing down. Don't you know you're getting a little too old to be jumping off the garage roof at your age.  Wink  What else could happen to you? I didn't make it to Lodi for the last two years and I probably won't make it this year either as our matches here in Minnesota stack up against theirs. We got rained out this weekend and I have a hunch that  Lodi did too as it's a pretty large storm. Will that stress fracture hold you up from coming to Minnesota in two weeks and shooting our long-range match?

Bob,
I been noticing when I look in the mirror shaving in the morning and thinking that I look pretty old for being 26.
I will be up there for your shoot if I can. They are working on a schedule for surgery so if all goes well I will make it.
