Currently all ammunition manufacturers are running full tilt for the Government so they can give billions of rounds of ammo to the Ukrainians. We won't see primers any time soon.
If/when things go back to "normal" $80 will be the "normal" price. Lucky for me I had 18K bought at $29 per 1000 some years ago. Dug through the shop a few weeks ago and found 4500 caps.  I have been buying black powder every chance I get, just bought a bunch of Schuetzen at $13/pound from the NMLRA a few weeks ago. And of course, I have probably a thousand flints on hand.

This might not be new information to some of us, but for the rest…

US Ammunition manufacturers don’t usually make primers for reloading.  They make primers for their ammunition production, and if they have excess primers then the primers are packaged for sale to reloaders.  When they have every factory running full bore to meet both Government contracts and sporting needs, they don’t have excess primers for you.

Seem to remember an article lately that told of a company which was going to produce primers only.  Believe they were located in Tennessee or Arkansas.  Great if they don't sell all the ammunition manufacturers.

I was just at my local gun shop out here in Oz, primers limited to 200 per customer and basically no stock on hand or available regardless of brand. The owner also informed me that commonly available centre fire ammunition wholesale cost went up this week by 35% and he is anticipating more increases to come. Sad

Arkansas, and they are still a ways out from being at full production capabilities.

Hate to disillusion anyone or disturb those who appear to be living blissfully in the past.  Currently the standard retail prices by large "discount" companies such as Midway list large Rifle Primers as follows: (even though they don't have any to sell)
Remington  $90/1000
Winchester   $80/1000
CCI  $80/1000
Federal   $80/1000
Federal Gold  $90/1000

Our local gun shows have them, but not at today's retail prices.

Unfortunately, don't look for this situation to improve any time soon.

Be thankful that we're single shot shooters and not "mag-dump from the AR-15" types, or "combat pistol" competitors.

Back during the Clinton years, there was an outfit at the SHOT shows who was selling or promoting D-I-Y primer reloading kits.  You disassembled your spent primers, punched out the dent, reloaded with some sort of stir-it-yourself chemicals (separate ingredients came in plastic bottles in the kit), crimped the anvil in place, and you were good to go.

At the time, that seemed a reasonable solution.  I saved a couple of gallons of primers (separated by size & type) in Mason jars.

Maybe we need to resurrect that idea.  Anybody know about chemicals and availability?

The gas check makers/dies they offer are quite interesting.

I think that was the guy.  Did not see any gizmos for resizing the primer or for anchoring the anvil.

What is the priming compound?  How is it shipped?

It comes in three envelopes, one of which is just ground glass.  He doesn't give chemical names for the others, but assures us that it's non corrosive, non mercuric.

On the Cast Boolits site there is a very extensive thread on making priming compound, where various formulations are given and discussed in detail.  (And an equally long and detailed one on the making of black powder.)

If you want to make homemade primers, all of this was sorted out 20 years ago, and is regularly updated.

Don’t read it if you are sleepy.  It may accelerate the effect. Grin
