I thought this was a joke post, because I assumed anyone interested in single shot rifles and/or 22 cal centerfires, would know who Gebby was. I assumed he knew and was pulling our leg.
Sorry if I offended anyone's sensibilities. Nice rifle

Hey I'm an old retired Infantryman, I don't have any sensibilities!!! Certainly didn't bother me I was just trying to figure out what I posted to be construed as a joke!!!
Nope sorry to say I had no Ideal who Gebby was, I just like old high walls and sharps and couldn't pass this one up! Thank ya'll for enlighting me!!! [/quote]

I bought a Stevens 44 1/2 yesterday at the gun show with an extra barrel in 35-40, a cartridge I was ignorant about until now. Huh

With many signing onboard with little knowledge, but interested enough to be willing to learn, and this applying to many of us older gentlemen(geezers)who still have much to learn, and recognize and are still willing to do so, we must remember that we all started with NO knowledge, but willing to pass on, kindly, what we have accrued through the years as the best course.   JMHO

The stories I heard about Jerry Gebby come from PO Ackley.  I was fortunate to visit his shop/home.  Gosh, must be nearly half a century ago.

He said Gebby was a sailor.

Great Score!  I am envious.

The only stamp on it is "35-40". I got it off the action today and now I'm not sure if it's a 35-40 Maynard or simply a necked up 32-40. The chamber length would suggest the latter, but maybe the Maynard chamber has a long throat?
Using the cleaning rod method. the twist is 1-16, 6 lands and it appears that it's a stub barrel project. It's full octagon, but in a lighter profile. It has 3/8" dovetails for front and rear sights and came with a fitted but unshaped fore-end.
I'm going to clean up the original #2 28-30 1/2 octagon barrel and put it back on. Given the scarcity and cost of 28-30 ammo and components, I may never get to shoot it.  Cry

I gave 12 for it. Finally got to round to shooting it last week, tried some 55grain and 50grain .224s on top of some H110, didn't like them, they were tumbling and hit the target sideways. I then tried some 40 grain and they made a nice round hole like they should so put 4 more down range and all four were touching. This was at 25 yrds so the plan is to load up and stick with the 40 grains and try it at 100 and 200 and see how it does, groups great at 25. The hole at top of  target is to see if the 40s were tumbling, then I aimed at the center orange for next 4 rounds.

Have you slugged the barrel and measured the twist?  Some of the early ones were .223"
