Going to try the picture thing.

Here is the muzzle loader I bought out of Mike Gish's estate.

I have no idea, it is still in Colorado.

Do you have any ideas?

No. I thought you got it since you posted a picture.

Is it on the way?

My buddy sent the picture when he picked it up. Too long and heavy to ship. If I cant figure a way to get to CO I'll have to wait until we meet up in Tulsa in November.

Anything can be shipped.  The barrel can be removed to fit in a smaller box. Bubble wrap the hell out of it.

Or pick it up on the way to Raton....  Smiley

The Raton idea is a thought.
All parties that have had this rifle in their hands worry about breaking in down in smaller pieces to ship.
That's why I almost didn't get it.

Take it apart and put it all in one box.  Bubble wrap the hell out of the parts. Insure it. So simple. Worry? Life is a worry.......

Neither Chuck or my buddy can/could figure out how to get it apart. Both were worried about breaking something.

Personally, I believe it can be done. But, I am not there. My buddy actually went to gunsmithing school.

Trust me, I am jonsing bad. The picture Chuck posted in the ad versus what it really looks like makes my mouth water.

It can be shipped the way it is. Auction houses ship long rifles all the time.
I think your buddies are enjoying YOUR rifle.  Grin

Easy answer.

Measure the rifle OAL.  Then, go to Lowes and buy two 1x6s' eight feet long, and a sheet of 1/4" masonite.  Also buy two 4 inch foam blocks 1 foot by 8 feet.

Lay the rifle on the masonite 3 inches from one end, and draw a line at the other end 3 inches past the other end of the rifle.  Cut along that line.  Then lay the rifle lengthwise in 3 inches on the sheet.  Measure 3 inches last the deepest part of the rifle and draw another line.  Cut along that line.  You now have a rectangle 3 inches per side longer/wider than the rifle dimensions.  Cut the foam that size.  Make a shadow box frame the size of the masonite.  Screw the masonite to one side of the shadow box.  Then, lay one foam piece down inside the box.  Lay the rifle down,  and wad some of the left over foam snug at each end.  Then, lay the other foam down on top of the rifle.  Then, screw the lid piece of masonite down.  Use plenty of 2 inch wood screws, they're cheap.

Stick your address label on, and take it to the UPS or FEDEX store, insure the heck out of it, and ship it.

Several years ago, I bought my mahogany cased Lyman-Ruger Centennial #1 from a gentleman on the East Coast.  It made it to SW Idaho safe and sound in the same type box.

This is simple!

Rich

The picture is not the best, but removing the barrel should not be troublesome for a "gunsmith". Does it have a hook breech? Remove key if so and tap the barrel up. No hook, loosen tang screw(s) hold stock and tap barrel gently on edge of work bench to free the asm. up. Also make sure the lock bolt does not pass thru a hole in breech plug. Check for a screw under trigger guard that might hold the standing breech in place.

Not me!!

I had a traumatic experience once doing that.  I took a rifle apart, cleaned it, then put it back together.  I had a small screw left over.

Was it the rifle that had a missing screw, or the operator that had a screw loose.
Once upon a time in the middle of nowhere Wyoming hunting Anteiope, threw the timing chain on my 73 Dodge Power Wagon. Two days later, despite laying everthing out on a tarp for reassembly, still had three bolts left over. Still missing three bolts at 250K, and running like a top when I sold it some 13 years later. Lucky, but screw loose operator.

If it is easier, just wait till November, the rifle will be fine. I once gladly waited a good five or six years till I could get a rifle from a good friend, who did similar for me. I did get to visit the rifle once in between, but I was on my way to somewhere else, so I was really there to visit friends.
