Avid gun collector and really enjoy shooting. Recently inherited a few older single shots. Still identifying and cataloging them, but wanted to share a few. Thanks

I will try and get some more pics this weekend, currently traveling for work. I know they are both Carl Stiegele rifles, I took a few pics of the markings to try and research a little.

That Brochardt stock is similar to one I am trying to whittle.
Thanks for the picture.

Carl Stiegele was the maker to the Bavarian Royal Court and made many super rifles, most very ornate with the finest engraving and inlays of precious metals. The firm also made some plain rifles.

The first few pics are of the Stiegele, however after a closer look not sure the other is….it appears to say Herrmann Dillinger.

The Winchester rifle on top is a High Wall that looks like it has been rebarreled and restocked. Is there a name stamped or engraved on the top of the barrel?

The Winchester rifle on bottom is a Low Wall and looks like it could be in its original configuration.

Let’s return to your first photo and see a the two engraved Ballard rifles!

The high wall is re-barreled in 219 Donaldson Wasp. The low wall, yes appears to be original, on the barrel I can only make out the “Winchester” barely…

The Ballards have both been re-barreled. I posted these on a Marlin page, got some good info.

First one is re-barred by Stevens in 22 short. Converted from center fire.

The other is a little goofy. It was re-barreled, the barrel is labeled Remington Model 37 Rangemaster. These were only offered in 22LR, but it appears the chamber has been re-worked for 22 Hornet. Going to take this one by my local gun smith to double check.

Here is a pic of the Remington barrel, I took the forearm off and looked everywhere….nothing. In all the old pics of the rangemaster barrels the 22LR was right at the end, this one was chopped there…

Reworking .22 rimfire barrels for Hornets and Lovells was S.O.P. for a good many years, even after WW2.   That's why you can still buy .223 Hornet bullets.  Not goofy at all.

The Rem. Rangemaster barrel looks to be on the ballard and I assume still a .22 LR so probably added in the 40's? (made from 1937 to 1954). Appears a lot of pulled off Win 52 and Remington barrels were doners to Ballards and Stevens rifles. Does the 22 short barrel have any other info on it.

On the Ballard with the Remington barrel seems to be a 22 Hornet, 22lr just falls down in the neck.

The other Ballard with the 22 short has no other markings, I pulled the forearm to double check. I was told possibly a Stevens barrel due to the style of font….

The belly-shooters of the 1930s were extremely sensitive to throat wear in their barrels.  The ground glass in the primer compound tended to settle at the 6:00 position, and get run over by the following shot.  Many a barrel was pulled and replaced for this fault, leading to a modestly plentiful supply of takeoffs that were repurposed to other actions and/or the small centerfires. Setting back and rechambering eliminated the worn spot, of course.

Not impossible that it's a 22-3000 Lovell.  An unwise chambering, but then I've got a Lovell built on a cast action by the respectable Sedgley firm in Philadelphia.

The chamber mouth of a Hornet will be about .298" diameter, and a Lovell about .315".

Not really, they all were owned and shot by my wife’s grandfather. He was into all things firearms: hunting, trap, bench shooting, re-loading, and tinkering. He was of German decent, and was told the older German rifles were in his family for awhile, but nothing other than stories.

I did measure the chamber, it did measure .298, that is why I was leaning toward 22 hornet. Also, I happen to know he was a fan of that round. Hope to get to the smith this week. I would like to take my boys shooting soon.

Good.  Only remaining thing to ascertain is whether it's a standard Hornet or a "K" Hornet.  Both are fine, but take different dies. Using .223 Hornet bullets will help keep wear in that soft steel barrel down. Cast bullets even better, but Hornets are notably finicky when loaded with cast.

Continuing to catalog and thought I would share. Found another single shot, Springfield 1873. I put this with the other “military” firearms in the collection. H&R Garand, Colt 1911 (serial # indicates 1918 date) and a Remington/Rand M1911A1 (1943).
