Barrel fluting

My latest addition to the gun room is a German Schuetzen rifle I aquired last November. It is the first one with a barrel that is not round or octagon. The depth & style of the flutes make me think the are decorative. I googled barrel fluting. Guess what, two experts wrote articles for gun magazines, one says unfluted barrels are stiffer the other says barrels are fluted to make them stiffer, so much for experts. Who is correct?

Fluted barrels are stiffer. That image shows , I ‘d guess, a decorative pattern, pretty far from any. type of traditional type fluting, I’d describe it as “ribbed”.

Stiffer than what? A bull barrel? I doubt it. A barrel turned down to the fluted diameter, of course. It is my understanding, were trying to lighting a barrel, yet maintain some of the stiffness of a much heaver barrel.

I'd say, for equal weight and identical finished length, a properly fluted barrel is stiffer. But, things get way off base for being classic or antique in spirit?

Kinda like the discussion of which is stiffer, octagon vs round...
Most times a solution in search of a problem.  Might help a bit with cooling as more surface, although...

First fluted barrel I have seen that’s not offensive to my eye. Like to see the entire rifle.

During my years shooting in high power competition, I had both fluted and unfluted barrels. All were made by Boots Obermeyer.
Fluting took a little weight off an otherwise heavy AMU tapered barrel. Other than that I couldn’t see any benefit.
The barrel shown here is very unique. I’m going to guess it was simply the barrel maker showing off his skills!

Well, I'm no Engineer but my instincts are saying that barrel fluting will reduce weight somewhat, without reducing stiffness too much. More for looks than anything ? I'm sure there's an Engineer among us that can set the record straight.

I had a nice German schuetzen "Martini" with scalloped octagon barrel and silver inlays at one time and I have seen others, so while they may not have been a thing in this country they definitely were over there. I may have a pic.

To me it looks like going to a lot of trouble to induce more stresses in the steel. It may have some advantages in adding some rigidity to thin little whippy barrels but, personally I've never liked the look.

In the case of mine, I think it was to have a "heavier" barrel (in max size) but maintain a "normal" weight. The rigidity in this case would be very close to that of the heavier barrel.
