These are the markings under the barrel from what I submise from the early barrel number was there a chance that Pope may have had a bit more involvement making this barrel(???) and what the heck do his marks mean?
nowhere on the barrel is the caliber marked. It is  a 32-40 for sure I shot it a bit last night.

I just picked it up yesterday at 4 pm.I had my breech seat kit and fired 15 shots just before dark at 50 yards to make sure it went "bang"
Just about an inch was all.but im not blaming the gun.i cast 50 Hudson bullets last night and I'll give it a go in the daytime this week.

21 over 1.41 seems to be Pope code for the 32-40 rifling and It is said if Pope personally worked on the barrel himself at Stevens a P was added by the barrel number

So this was probably not done by Pope but by Ross.

They also kept making them under Pope's name after he had already left Steven's unfortunately.
Hopefully yours is not one of those.
Is it a left hand gain twist or is it a straight twist.

The numbers are the settings for Pope's rifling machine and it no way indicate twist. Pope barrel numbers while he was in Hartford ended about barrel number 400 when he went to Stevens in 1901. The last barrel number he made at Stevens was 1237. Pope's job at Stevens was to oversee the Stevens Pope department. He was a supervisor and not a bench hand. Barrels he made at Stevens were marked with a P but there were a lot made while he was there that he supervised. Most SP barrels are not marked with a P. This rifle was from a collection in California, then Las Vegas.

TRowe-

Why does Smith in his book say numbers under 1200  Pope rifled them?
I've heard otherwise that agrees with you.i can't remember the source though

Yes it is missing, do you me asking if you have it? Mine came with another one that is bored/reamed smooth with another, lower serial number. It lines up but without rifling. I know where the "donor" rifle is rumored to be, evidently it has had the barrel shortened at the muzzle. Small world.
