Phoenix action

I am wondering what you all can tell me about these actions. I was just offered one in a 12 ga configuration, are they worth getting, and possibly building into a rifle for other usages? Definitely know it can't be made into a modern high power cartridge rifle.

Thanks,
Mike

My Phoenix has been rebarreled in 40-60 Maynard. I enjoy using it. You must fully seat the cartridge before you close the block. Make sure the extractor is working properly. I have shot it for BPCR and scored a 30 first time out.

I have one that I picked up in 12 ga, put a 40 cal barrel on it, chambered it in 40-60Win.  The 12 gage extractor won't work for it and I've started another extractor, just haven't finished it... someday.  Should be a neat rifle when finished, it'll get a few looks.  Bottom metal on it is real close to a rolling block and for grins I have one of Rodney's single set triggers I'm installing in mine.  Smiley

About the extractor; the H&A midsize action was designed to use both 16 gauge along with rifle cartridges. A sliding extractor was was fitted to the rifle barrel and was powered by the shotgun extractor. Would that apply? Could we see a picture of the Phoenix? Cannot find information on it.

Here's mine. GT said he made the tang sight. I suppose that it should be noted that there are about 3 different generations of how the extractor worked.

I have copied that tang sight - often- at least the base.  It's a Robbins if I remember correctly.

Here's a picture of the Phoenix I have, the groove on the top of the receiver ring is a give-away that the action was once a shotgun.  The original barrel was bent and kinked like it had been a jack handle once so the alteration doesn't bother me.
And of course, Rodney cast a few of these so I have one on the docket to do, just not sure what caliber to make it...

Oneatatime that is a sight that I made years ago probably in the 80s. Dick Binger I had loaned me a Robbins sight to copy. That was when all the sights you could find with windage were the Italians leaning towers of Pisa.
Yes there are 3 types of extractors for the Whitney Phoenix action. Most of what you run across are the shotguns actions. And as Greg says you can tell by the groove in the top of the receiver ring. I have converted three or 4 to 4570. I have one now that I would like to do in a 3855. The ones that I cast like Greg shows has the third type extractor and it is for rifle cartridges. It has the lever on the right side of the receiver. The shotgun ones have a cam on the right side and the intermediate one is simply the cam with a straight extractor in the center bottom of the barrel that is connected to the cam like the shotgun extractor. Also the trigger guard triggers mainspring and I believe trigger guard screws and tang screw will interchange with a Remington rolling block.
