I've seen simple push and  "hook and push" type on older guns.
Were there Weber or Rice style back in Schuetzen era?

I would say no.  15 minutes after the first one appeared every company would have one out, unless a patent number was marked clearly.

The old "Monkey see Monkey do..." thing.

It's strange that there were not because there were quite a few lever type seaters for the muzzle loading schuetzen rifles.

30 years ago I used to see quite a few Ballard's and High Walls with a stud on the receiver, left side of the chamber for a breach seater to hook on to.
The only one I have seen done like that is on my Cody Ballard that I bought from Steve Seibolt except it's mounted on the barrel.
Quite elegant

I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment:
"It's strange that there were not because there were quite a few lever type seaters for the muzzle loading schuetzen rifles."
In that era, the serious and top tier shooters shot muzzle loaders (be they percussion or cartridge rifles). Pope, Schoyen, et al. made a living making breech-muzzle loading rifles for the Schuetzen game. Until smokeless powders displaced black and duplex loads, breech seating larger than groove diameter bullets (as many of us do today) was not a main stream loading method.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

RSW-

Thanks I hadn't thought about that on the groove diameter bullets.

Schoyen did use the stud approach on his breech seaters.
Below is a version of my own based on Schoyen's design but also improved on. I have also made several using a Colt Loading lever for friends. Based on Schoyen's so I do tend to believe at least his were being used at the time.
Also those I made had interchangeable seater cases so the same seater could be used on several rifles and for various cartridges. One of the rifles that I made one for and a Ballard did have a stud installed on the barrel but I am also not sure it was actually a vintage installation.
