Hard to beat the Lee 20 Lb. Ladle pouring Pot. I still have mine from 1998 when I bought it and it still works just fine. A friend gifted me a Lyman Mag 25 Digital Melting Furnace. But in all honesty it really isn't better and the Fan is already acting up and after only a couple of years of use. It will go down the road long before my inexpensive Lee 20 lb pot. In fact it is now for sale and before it quits working all together and the cost to fix is simply just not worth the cost. Same thing happened to my Waage Pot in fact they wouldn't even sell me the heating element to be able to fix it myself.

I'm surprised at how my Lee pots have lasted, but the thing that surprised me more is the fact that these cheap little pots keep the temperature within a tighter tolerance than my old $300 RCBS pot.

Amen and I eventually hooked up my 20lb. Lee Pot to a 1000 Watt Dinner Switch thanks to Jim Borton's advice.
It actually held a better constant temperature allot better than this Lyman Mag 25 Digital Melting Furnace currently does.

What is the best tool for checking the temperature of the alloy to within 2 degrees that won't cost an arm and a leg?  John, I have read where people install PID switches to control the temperature.  Is that what the dimmer switch does?  It is all Greek to me!  On your dimmer switch do you use a wall switch mounted somewhere and just run the wires into it?  A picture would help me understand what you do.  I am using my RCBS Digital but not checking the actual temperatures so have no idea how precise it is.  I cast a hundred 7mm bullets today to try in the RCBS mould I just bought and they weighed within a 1/2 grain from the lightest to the heaviest with at least 3/4 of them within 1/10 of a grain.  I am using 16:1 at 800 degrees and it seems to have helped my quality in the 30 caliber bullets as well.  Tom

Tom picture is on my desk top and it no longer works. Sliding Dimmer switch was placed into an electrical box and then attached to the wall. A power cord was wired to it and it then sent power over to a duplex receptacle for the pot to be plugged into. The thermostat on the Lee Pot was bypassed and it needs to be a 1000 watt dimmer switch. Anything less will get to hot and cannot be used. To set the various temps once they are known you can then just simply use a watt meter to then repeat any temperature setting you want. Once written down for future use you just slide the dimmer switch to the power that you need being supplied for each particular temperature degree setting. So the pot is now getting constant power and there is no cycling on and off and that is how it holds a constant temperature.

My Lyman MAG25 Digital pot is also 3 inches taller than my Lee 20lb. Pot.
This also makes it quite abit more uncomfortable to use for ladle pouring.
It also does not hold a constant temp. as one might tend to think it does. Not really a big swing and actually not a big thing as everytime time you dip the ladle back into the pot it also changes the temp. As the ladle is also cooling while each bullet is being cast and even more so if one is casting slow.
