How young do you start kids shooting?

My dad would not let us carry loaded guns until we were 8 but I know i as shooting with supervision before that but don’t remember  at what age.  I have a grandson that will be 5 coming up and would like to get him started as young as it is safe.  And, with older guns rather than the new black guns.  His mother, my daughter in law, is now shooting, but has never been around guns and enjoys it, so there won’t be any obstacles there.

BB gun at 8. I was only allowed to shoot it into a BB trap in the back yard. Thereafter I was accused of breaking everything that ever got broke in my neighborhood. I was innocent.

My oldest granddaughter was in our Clubs Junior program at age five. She passed Her Hunter Safety course at age 8. I started shooting in the first grade and all of my children and grandchildren went through our clubs Junior program. Unfortunately they have now changed it to having to be at least age of 10 of which I do not totally agree with myself. At nights after work and dinner we should shoot my Walther Target air pistol out in the garage for pennies damn near every night.

My daughters each started shooting when they were about 9 years old ... under supervision.

My son shot his first squirrels with a chipmunk 22 at 7. He shot at silhouettes from about 5 off a rest and won a BB gun shoot at Freeland around 6 or 7. But my wife and I shot a lot so he was immersed in it for ever. He started formal small bore and air rifle at 10. That said, I have coached Juniors for 33 years and we start kids at 11. We did do them younger for a long time but kids attention spans are all over the place and we felt 11 MOST showed they were more apt to be focused and not play around. JMO

Iron sighted single shot 22 is the best way to get them started. Teach them the basics of rifle craft and marksmanship, after a good training on safe gun handling.

I don’t believe there is one age that is the perfect time to begin.  I think a lot depends on the individual child.  I started both my children around six or seven.  My daughter enjoyed it, but never took up the sport.  My son liked it, too, but it wasn't until he was almost 25 that he really took off and got back in earnest. My one grand daughter took shooting at about thirteen; loves rifle and trap shooting.  My other grand daughter is just six.  I just finished a .22 single shot for her.  I think she will be ready this fall.  I’ll let her Dad get her started.
Shooting something they can handle, weight wise, and not too much noise or recoil seems to be a winning ticket.

In my experience, if you teach young girls to shoot, they'll soon be out-shooting you, which is great!

I started my son at about age 8 shooting a Stevens little scout with CB caps. Moved up as he progressed and was shooting a 38/55 at age 13. Then we went to a 40/50 SS and now at age 30 he can shoot anything he wants.

bnice, what some of these illegal immigrants and those on H!V visa's that over stayed their visa's, don't seem to understand that shooting is in Wyoming's blood. We shoot a lot here, start kids on proper gun handling and marksmanship at a young age.
The 4-H shooting sports draw more kids here than any of the other segments of 4-H.
As to when to start a kid shooting, that's mostly dependent on the kid. When they can physically handle the rifle and have developed enough critical thinking skills enough to understand what's about to happen then it's time to take the time to teach them.
The thing I hate to see is someone hand a kid a 10-22 with a 3 round magazine and let them start blazing away...Start them on a single shot 22, iron sights and teach them proper rifle craft. Airguns are not a bad place to start, provided it's a good one and not the 29$ one off the big box store shelf.

My son started shooting at an early age. He was Jr State Champion in IHMSA Revolver Class shooting my S&W K22 at age 8.
