Stevens 45 Range Rifle

How scarce are these rifles? I one I'm looking at is 25 caliber built on a 44 frame. It has the Vernier sight, buckhorn in the middle and a blade front sight. This is the first one I've ever seen and I'm wondering what a fair price would be for one in 85% condition?

25-20 SS? 28 inch barrel, Beach front, Stevens vernier, small Swiss butt? Very good or better barrel? Good CC like this one? I might guess $850-$950.

No beech front sight and faded (almost gone) case colors. 28 inch barrel in unknown 25 caliber bright and shiny maybe a #3 it seemed bigger than the #2 on my other 44. I couldn't see any shoulder in the chamber so maybe 25-21? It didn't appear deep enough for 25-25. 25-20SS maybe, the shoulder it pretty small. Swiss butt plate. I wish I had more time to look it over but the local auction house was closing when I got there. Thanks for your confirming price Smiley

I have one on a 44-1/2 in 32-20.
It's one of my favorites!
I paid $1400 two years ago.

Yes, the barrel is on the heavy side but just out of the action picture it is marked 25-20.

That's another thing that has me puzzled, no caliber markings. The "J Stevens A&T" is crisp and deep marked on the top flat. Nothing on the flat below where my other barrels are marked.

Did you buy this, or still to be auctioned?

Probably won’t be able to check this before the auction.

It may be marked under the fore end, and even there it might be just the caliber. As in 25 vs 25-20. The actual cartridge may be marked on the extractor, but you will need to pull it out to see that.

I have seen a few like that, they were early rifles with a 7 o’clock extractor.

A serial number would be interesting.

I notice that the buttstock misses meeting the frame by a noticeable amount, an unusual condition if the frame and stock started out together from the factory.

Needless to say I didn't have deep enough pockets but people are crazy at auctions. A box of AA 410 shells is selling for $215. 25 rounds not a case of 250 Shocked

Bill, at some time in its past, Harold Parkenfarker decided it needed to have the stock glass bedded and who needs stinkin instructions. Maybe he did it in stages or just didn't tighten the screws, but it ended up with the stock at a little upward angle. Since I believe glass bedding became popular in the 1960s, maybe it was then. In spite of the way it turned out, it did not adversely affect the shooting;-)

If done properly glass bedding does help in regards to accuracy but it also should also not be readily seen. It surely was an improvement for my own competitive breech seating benchrest work. So I personally would not discourage it if it is being done correctly and I have always done my own.

Or our we now also talking about a 44 1/2?

A couple of years ago I asked Ron Peterson to look at this one and he said "Ask $1400 and sell it for $1300".  It was quite nice and had a good bore.  25-25.  I did fit the correct butt plate to it before I sold it. Picture shows the butt plate before I color cased it.

Regards,
Joe
