125gr .30 cal?

Is it worth my time to develop a 125gr .30 caliber bullet/load for 200 yard targets? I have a couple that shoot excellent at 100.

125 Sierra jacketed flat base, 37 to max of 40 grains IMR 4895 and 30-06 case and standard primer. Old 300 meter load. Info I received from the NRA decades ago. Shot extremely well in a 1903A3 Springfield. Frank

The big question is - for schuetzen BR competition or another purpose?

Someone else will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a .30 125gr bullet will be on the light side to be competitive at typical cast bullet velocities, especially taking into account wind sensitivity.
Good accuracy will certainly be possible, but match-winning accuracy, I have my doubts.

This old duffer has been shooting a 32-40 Rem Hepburn
chambered rifle for several years in 200yds Schuetzen.
This is actually originally a true 30 cal cartridge-/300/.308". About 10% more case capacity in the "formed from 303 brit" brass as compared to the 32-40 BMW.
I shoot the heavier bullets in this 8  twist barrelled rifle. Either the Lyman 311299-nom. 200gr or the 311334-nom 190gr without the gas checks.
I have fun and have shot into the low 240s with this rifle
and my limited experience in Schuetzen
I also shoot my M1941 USMC sniper rifle,1903A1, in CBA Vin Mil matches at 100 and 200yds with these same bullets to good effect. Even 100-6x targets.

My 32/40 Tip-Up. I think they may be on the light side as well for consistent 200yd work. Just looking for more experienced opinions than mine.

I shot very good scores with 225 grain bullets at 200 yards in my 38-55 at Hamilton MT a couple years ago. That range gets tricky switchy winds but not strong winds like Eastern MT.  Have used 150 grain bullets in my Maynard 32-20 at Butte, in the wind. Kept em all on the paper.

Maybe a .30 Pope bullet would work for you. Think it weighs about 200? 180?

Now we know it is for your .314 groove dia 32-40,
I suggest you look at the Lyman 314299. 200gr, for 200yds
I has a long bore ride and short body that would not take up much. Of course, we do not know your twist rate.
That will possibly limit the choice of bullet length.

As Westerner mentioned,
The Harry Pope designed Lyman 308403 at 170 grains,
may work well as it is bore ride, except for the base band
which is 0.314 tapering to the base at 0.311.
That is the dimensions from my mold.  Pope designed it so it could be finger "seated" on the (example 30-06) fired case mouth. It therefore is effectively mostly breech seated into the bore

I appreciate all the input. After shooting this afternoon, I am going to stick with my 156gr tapered bullet. Next casting session, I will make up 50 or so out of the mold John Louis made me for use in this rifle. My guess on that bullet is 165-170gr. I was leaning towards shorter lighter bullets based on my 1:18 twist in the 32/40. I should be calling it a 31/40.

I think you are right in using the Shorter bullets for your 18 twist.
