Too cold to shoot…..

-14 this morning. It’s too cold to shoot, so I spent the last couple days consolidating things. I moved my small 9” South Bend into the shooting room with the 1928 South Bend 13 that I restored 5 years ago. Now all my tooling is in one location. I’m just itching for that Pence barrel and my BRC barrel to get here so I can start making chips! Even though the range room is heated, I never gave a second thought to the nasty “heat” mirage escaping out the open shooting slot. I need to find a remedy for that.

When I reflect in the sauna, I realize that I am living in my own dream world. I am very thankful each and every day. Maybe tonight in the sauna, I will conjure up another cartridge sure to make ragged one holers every time!

Thank you so very much for sharing what you did.
In regards to Mirage I cannot help you.
But I do truly admire what you are trying accomplish as being your own personal goals.
Wow I also admire those two lathes that you have!

If you do come up with an answer, let me know!
Even though some use our heated shooting house, the mirage is always there so any serious shooting is done at the outside benches, and is more than often -40. Shooting seriously those temps becomes an art in itself! Tongue

John Schaefer was very competitive and always shut the furnace off when we shot together (to eliminate the heat mirage).
We shot a number of times at -40 F at the Spruce Grove Alberta Gun Range.
Alberta Schuetzen Lube performed very well at those temperatures.
After two shots your fingers were frozen and it was tough to feel the trigger.
One solution is to have a battery heater beside you to heat your trigger finger between shots.
Yes working in your shop is more enjoyable.

Keep the pics coming! I love seeing other ranges.

Frank, Here is a better pic of the 1928 South Bend and one of me bringing it in 7 miles in March of 2015. It about killed me getting the pcs. inside to start working on them. I found a complete 13” upper “silent drive” in CA and had the thing freighted into town.

Picture of the insulated lunchbox lined with a 80 Watt Battery Blanket used to warm your trigger finger between shots when shooting down to -40 F.
Might need to throw in a small generator as well in your snowmobile sled.

To think that I used a balmy 20 degrees as an excuse for poor shooting yesterday.

My slighter and fire forming groups were much better than my load development and so called shots for score. Looks like I need a better excuse Angry

After seeing that, no more whining or excuses from me either! That’s some serious shooting commitment. I just finished brushing out my 200yd lane from a summers tag alder growth. I’ll pay this evening for swinging a machete all morning. Besides sighting of some hunting rifles, I’ve never shot bench at 200yards. I’ll cast up a couple hundred bullets and start shooting the 32/40 Tip-Up in preparation for making everyone else feel really good about their shooting at EauClaire this spring. My goal is last place or better. It will be my first real shoot.
