Can anyone help identify this rifle?

Print Post
Hello All. New member here. First post.
I recently picked up this rifle and don't know much about it other than it's a falling block of European origin and I believe chambered in 8.15x46R. I would like to know who might have made it if that is possible. I can tell the wood has been redone and someone added a Ruger scope base. I have made up a few rounds from 30-30 brass and slugged the barrel at .316.  Any suggestions?

Who cares who made it, it's gorgeous! If you post the pic of the barrel marks over on the DoubleGun site you might get some good leads. German & Austrian Sporting Guns @ doublegunshop.com

If the scope base comes off, there may be a maker's name underneath.  Looks like a fine Stalking rifle  and the numbers under the barrel tell a story, unfortunately, I don't know what they mean

The rifle is very nice indeed!
Hopefully you can get it up and shooting and then being able to fully enjoy it for what it was actually made for.

I guess it's from one of many individual makers from the past.
Nothing under the scope base. The bench is a Hammacher and Schlemmer. I think they sold them through Montgomery Ward in the 20's or 30's.

Thanks for the info on the bench! Mine looks identical right down to the patina!  It would however take about two days to clear it off for a picture. Sad

They do make for a good photography backdrop. That's a very nice rifle you have there.

I have one not near as pretty. They are often called System Nimrod. I will try to attach a link to my earlier post about it on German Gun Collector’s Association forum.

Proofed November 1910, number 909 in the proof house ledger, the 172,28 is the bore in gauge. Standard BUG proof marks. If it has not been rechambered it is probably 8.15x46r. Any cast bullet load for 32-40 should be safe. It will like 160 to 180gr round nose lead bullets. If there is a name on the barrel, it will most likely be the retailer, it would be assembled by several craftsmen, there were only a few large firms at that time selling complete rifles. The German gun making fraternity at that time was almost a cottage industry.

Thank you. At least I know when it was made.  I have some stop ring bullets from Buffalo Arms. They are 165 gr round nose at .316 with a stop ring at .328 which I thought sounded large but I know little about SR type bullets.

That is about normal for the stop ring. I shoot stop ring cast about172 gr from an NEI mold in my schuetzen rifles. I shoot fixed ammo in my stalking rifles.

Interestingly enough the original swaged projectiles I have (2 different makes and shapes) for the 8.15 have a base diameter of .321. The NEI mould I use is .316. I feel that performance may improve with a little more neck tension and have been playing with straight line busing dies. So far does not seem to make any difference. Wink oh, Black Powder by the way haven't yet got to trying smokeless.
