Very sorry to hear the loss of your friend. Maybe in the next 24 years I can shoot a group like that….

Jerry was a friend to many Assra members, he was one of those “one of a kind”  men that told you what was on his mind and he didn’t hold back, he still holds some Assra records that probably never will be broken. this is a sad day for me.  Ledball.  Aka.  Paul Amberger

As far as I know, Jerry only shot 40 caliber and higher.  Breech seating with a hammer and dowel, his accuracy was a combination of science, art, and magic.  I will miss him.

I used to love to go see Jerry at his booth at Friendship I'd split my time between there and the slug-gun range to see Marlin Basset, Both are gone now and the worlds a poorer place.
My favorite memory of Jerry is from the only Schuetzenfest at Friendship. when we got there they announced that because it was Friendship we all had to at least duplex. Well, I didn't even have any black much less a load and didn't know what to do. Jerry did. He set up a Belding and Mull to throw about 5 grains of Goex and Jerry said we'd just top off our loads with enough Goex to smoke a little. Jerry, Jake Simmons and I all shared that measure and as I recall we all shot pretty well.
I'll miss him

I also got to know Jerry through his booth at Friendship.  And the following story illustrates, I think, the kind of man he was.

This was in the early 1970s.  Among the several goodies in his booth was a Pope-barrelled hi-wall with all accessories.  As I remember, the price was either $3000 or $3500.  Anyway, at some point Jerry announced he was leaving the booth for awhile, and left it in charge of a teenage boy (son?; other relative?; I never did learn.)  And since Jerry was gone, I left, too.

About half-an-hour later I returned.  Jerry wasn't back.  But almost immediately I noticed that the hi-wall was gone - but the accessories were still there.  Damn!!

But before I could ask what had happened, Jerry showed up and asked for me.  In a nutshell, the boy said he hadn't known the accessories were part of the deal, (and apparently neither did the buyer).  All Jerry said then was, "Let's try to find him!", and they both took off.  And since somebody had to, I minded the booth.

About an hour later, Jerry and the boy returned, having had no luck.  Figuring that the shit was finally going to hit the fan, I got up to leave,  But all Jerry said then - and all I 'd guess he ever did say on the matter - was "You made a big mistake.  Learn from it!"

My memory failed me. Again. I had as many people as possible sign a target at that first Coors match. I obviously met him, as he signed it. I will have to find and go through photographs I took to see if he appears in any. Forty years is a long time ago, but at times seems like yesterday. I wish I could remember more of that chance meeting.
