the demographics thread....

Since there isn't a member map, or any suiitable place to see info about one another on the forum, the demographics thread has been pretty well received so far. It could become a sticky and help to get to know each other if it doesn't get marched down the list as new threads open up. 
A search function for members with a map would be even better, of course.

I also wish there was a place on this site where one could contact local to them shooters that would be willing to mentor a new person to this shooting sport.

For instance the HAM radio community have what they call Elmers.  Local clubs have people that volunteer to help new hams.

I would just bring it up in the General Discussion section ask the question and post where you live. Most folks would be more than willing to help others out.
