Our gun club has a very active junior program, and supplies all the guns and ammo, plus instruction for free. On rare occasion we've had a parent who wasn't a member, or even a gun owner, show up to ask if their child could get firearms safety instruction, and the club has gotten them involved in the junior program as a method to learn safety, but also familiarize hem with shooting sports.
A couple of those kids who never had exposure to guns before ended up not only becoming very good shooters, but went on to shoot and win at the state level or higher.
We're always proud of the junior shooter program, and especially proud of them when someone new to guns joins and sticks with it so long!

I believe that getting youth involved is key.
I live in Calgary, Alberta. My Sister lives on Okotoks AB, just a few miles to the South. She drives School Bus there. On a recent visit, we mentioned a Trap & Skeet club nearby. She told me she has taken School Bus loads of High School aged kids to that club to shoot Trap. Guns, ammo, everything supplied by the Club. 1:1 supervision on the range. They get to experience some fun shooting activity and see that its not "evil" and can actually be safe and fun.
I've recently joined that Club and intend to volunteer in that program.

Unfortunately trap and what we do are in no way similar nor is the available access. To both the type of firearms that we use and a place to go out and to shoot them. On the other hand there are quite a few trap, skeet and sporting clays facilities that are open to the public in this area. Last I heard the high school a coupe of towns over from here still had an active trap team.

Let's see, John, both involve shooting a long gun and hitting a target. You have to start somewhere.

I totally agree I started out with a Red Ryder BB gun back in the first grade. Was also fortunate to live in the country for awhile and Grandpa had a ranch and a place hunt or to just go out and to shoot freely.
Son, daughter and all three granddaughters also spent time in our clubs junior program.

Years ago in the state of California, when they were invaded by transplants, the live and let live lifestyle died. It was everyone for themselves and the themselves were always more important than yourselves.

Hikers and horse riders had always generally got along and shared the trails. Trails were simply marked “Motorized vehicles allowed” or not. Then came the new fangled off road bicycles, trail running and people packing gear on dogs and Llama’s. About as close to range wars on public land as you could get when you added in the environmentalists.

It took about 15 years for those who wanted to use public, land to realize they were losing to those who wanted public land closed to humans. Just because the environmentalists were out numbered 5/1 had little effect when it came time to vote. All you had to do was convince the horse riders and runners the bicyclists were the problem and you could get them kicked out.

If I remember right the shooters were the first to go in many places.

It’s not likely Schuetzen itself will die. At least not before all shooting stops due to range closures. Unless of course we bring it on ourselves through petty divisions.

"First Steps" in breaking the narrative that firearms or shooting sports are somehow evil or "un-safe". Busting a few clay pigeons  probably has the most "acceptable" reputation for Mom or Dad to sign that release form. Same club I mentioned has a "Ladies League". If you can get "Mom" involved you're away to the races and maybe Rifle or Pistol shooting will follow once the "Ice is Broken". Heck, they might even go to a Gun Show one day and see some of the "Art Work" in some of the old rifles used in Schuetzen and maybe give it a try.

My youngest grand daughter now 23 was wanting to get a shooting scholarship to go to TCU University. So I bought her a Feinwerkbau 2700 light rifle. She also had a grant as she also wanted to become a youth minister.
Unfortunately and all though she could have made it to TCU with her shooting abilities. She unfortunately incurred a health issue to where she could no longer have achieved either of her own lifetime goals in life.

Well, I thought that I’d just get flamed to well done and would have to wear a disguise to Etna Green next year when I posted the thoughts that have been concerning me in the initial post.  I have been surprised by the number of responses, and their scope.
I must say I think the discourse here has been food for thought for all of us, and I think it will give us all an impetus to see how we can interest someone in possibly getting involved in our sport ……or even just aware of it.  Many thanks for the thoughtful discussions.
( had been thinking I’d probably have to sell the Darr….guess I’ll keep it)

I personally don't look at it as being discourse but more about ones own personal experiences in life. I have actually enjoyed all of the individual comments tremendously and it is not often that are being presented.
