I have a Cody Ballard with a .38-50 Rem-Hep chamber which is a very tight. Like you experienced, cases formed from Rem .30-40 brass would not chamber. My solution was to grind my full length sizing die shorter to the point where it would size cartridge case heads enough to chamber. Problem solved.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Think you've got the answer.
Had to do the same with a 40-65 chamber I had once upon a time. Seems that RCBS once sold 'small base' dies that took care of the problem. However, like with many suppliers, finding them today is a trick.

Typically there are allot of sizing dies that are  just made out ot 12L14 and it is actually extremely easy to machine. If you happen to have a chambering reamer you can just simply make your own. Below is a link to where you can actually buy a sizing die.blank.

I have a postcard from the Cody shop at my hunting camp tacked on wall.
Every time I see one I regret not ordering one.
