Ruger #1 getting closer.
Dec 5th, 2021 at 4:58pm
Print Post
I started a Ruger #1 for my personal use in 1990, it is getting close to completion. I wanted to do some mods I had seen on an action that Lenard Brownell had built for his personal rifle while working at Ruger. The tangs have been modified to a straight taper, eliminating the double step of the factory tangs. The quarter round section at the lower front of the receiver was removed leaving a half round on the underside of the receiver. Once it was all polished with the barrel and stocks completed the action was sent to Brian Gause for engraving, it came back yesterday and I am very pleased with the results.

Gorgeous minimal engraving and everything else is superbly finished. All nice touches with the action modifications.
Looking forward to see it all put together, that’ll be a guild quality rifle!

Very subtle changes, and the perfect amount of engraving. It's great, and should make a very nice rifle! Hope you're able to finish it soon!

Beautiful work, and no surprise that one photo of your Ruger is now featured in Mr. Gouse's gallery of completed work.  Well done, indeed!

It's so good to see other folks with projects hung out that far, nice work!

Yes it is!
And I thought the LH transitional flintlock Jaeger that I've been "working" on for 23+ years was a long one!  Roll Eyes

Well done! Thanks for sharing.

I look forward to seeing the finished project, hopefully sooner than 31 years hence!

Thankfully the rest of the rifle is completed and I have worked up both cast and jacketed loads for it. So once the receiver returns from being coin finished it will be a simple matter to assemble the components and begin enjoying it. It is barreled in one of my favorite calibers, the 30-40 Krag or Government if you prefer. Stocked in a quality piece of English walnut with a Stan McFarland skeleton butt plate and a Jerry Fisher grip cap and checkered in a classic multi point pattern. The finished rifle will be a joy to hunt with and take to the range.

Well done!

My only project that dates back (the same year) to 1990 is my wife.  It, too, is nearing completion.  At least, that is what she told me...

The action is at Mahovsky's Metalife for the final finish. Supposedly it will be on the way back to New Mexico next week. With the Holidays and the shipping rush associated with them I am doubtful it will be here before the first week or so of the new year. The safety has been modified to a lower profile and checkered for a positive purchase with gloved or cold hands.

Beautiful action! As always, your design and modifications are thoughtful and well executed. Tapering the tangs and removing the quater-round section on the front of the action brings this Ruger No.1 closer to those classic English falling block lines.

I hope you'll share the finished action (and completed rifle) with us.

Thanks for the name of the final finish people.  And, I am also hoping to see the finished gun.

Looking forward to seeing the finished rifle.  I too really enjoy the 30-40 krag.  I have 2 rifles in it and foolishly sold a Ruger #1 in high polish finish.

I need to take photos of the completed rifle, it turned out pretty nice. I really need to get a newer camera, mine is close to 18 years old and the quality of the photos leaves a lot to be desired.

Very nice! Think I'll have to have mine engraved at some point (once I work up the nerve to take mine apart  Undecided).

The Ruger No 1 is a favorite of mine. I bought the first in 1969 at Suter's in Colorado Springs, after a long search. Paid full retail, $265, and happy as a clam. It was a 25-06 varmint, but now a 219 Donaldson. To have one as beautiful as yours, and the talent to get it there, is only a dream I have had.
