Hey Folks, I just scored the correct Lyman receiver sight  for my Third model Winder Musket. It came with a double trigger lever. Do you think I could knock down two hundred yards rams in silouette? john

I recently sold such a sight that had been bent, and I tweaked it back into shape and put a bargain basement price on it.  Yes, the .22 short will reach a 200 yd ram and knock it down.  Be sure to double check your elevation, and be sure the rams are made of really thin balsa wood on a really narrow stand.  You could also increase knockdown power by rechambering to .22 LR.  You might have accuracy problems beyond 50 yds, though. I have owned 4 or 5 of the Winders in the past, and think they are really neat!  Oldwyo

Don't bother with the rechambering process.  The Winder has a 1:20" twist and a standard chamber that was a lot like a funnel, making it able to shoot anything from BB Caps (aka Gov't Special) at 35 to 50 feet thru Standard Velocity Shorts at 50 feet to 25 yards or even 50 yards.  Back when the Winders were built (1904-1920), there were no such things as High Velocity or High Speed loadings.  But in the early 1930s, there were some reports of High Velocity Long Rifle cartridges giving reasonable accuracy at 100 and 200 yards.

Lay hands on a couple of boxes of Standard Velocity Long Rifles and maybe 3 or 4 boxes of High Velocity stuff.  Start testing them at 50 yards.  My experience is that the High Velocity stuff will shoot better at 100 yards.  Then give them a try at 200.
