Actually, Unertl would be somewhat late. A Winchester A5, early Fecker, or better yet a J. Stevens scope. The 368 Stevens are fairly common and reasonably priced. There are others, but they can get to be priced higher than the value of the intended rifle. There are a number of currently made scopes that would also fill the bill, the MVA (Montana Vintage Arms) scopes look period, and have much better optics, up to I believe 10X. I would investigate them first. There are some other less expensive copies of older scopes, but the mounts are, or were somewhat lacking, and the optics not quite up to par. With optics, you generally get what you pay for. Others here will perhaps have other recommendations.  Krag

Lyman 438. This scope was a catalog option for the 417.

MVA makes a perfect copy of the A5 the only thing different is better optics.

The Lyman 422 would also be appropriate with suitable mounts.  The really nice thing, as I remember, is that both the 422 and 438 were Lyman's versions of Stevens' scopes, introduced after Lyman bought the Stevens scope department.

The Lyman 438 with the better mounts would be a good choice, the 422 not so much (imnsho.) The 438 was built with Bausch and Lomb glass if memory serves. And the list goes on.

The 418’s were factory drilled and tapped for scope blocks, so it makes it pretty simple to put an external adjustment scope on.
While there are certainly better scopes than the Lyman 438, they were made in the same era as the 418. A wollensak scope would be appropriate also.

A lot rides on Skwerl44"s intended use, tin cans, or best accuracy results for rimfire black powder silhouette etc. Some disciplines too have certain requirements to meet, such as clicks or not, power limits etc. I believe one of the mounts available on the Lyman 438 would meet either need. I am sure the MVA mounts/rings are available with or without clicks, and in higher powers than the Lyman 438, Wollensak, Winchester A5. or Lyman 5A. I am not sure of the time frame, but an early Fecker might also be a candidate, and a very good scope. A lot to sort through. My suggestion would be to take the time to decide what you ultimately need, and proceed on that basis. As long as you are happy with your decision, that is all that really matters.
