Coming back from offhand practice session today different route stopped in a gun shop I rarely visit. Shelf full of fresh 1000 pack Remington  9 1/2 large rifle primers.
69.95.

Same primer as listed with Midway @ 79.95 plus Haz shipping & out of stock. Guess double two years ago price is the new normal, first primers I have seen for a year.  Except for the price It’s a good sign.

Boats I personally haven't seen any primers that I actually need for over two years. They are the Federal Gold Medal Match Large Pistol Magnum Primers. Before this shortage began. Everyone had them in stock while all of the others were no longer even being able to be found. My only saving grace was that I had a case but I am also down to only about 3,000.

I was just in a Cabelas and the only thing they had in the way of powder or primers was a great quantity of CCI small rifle primers at only $129.95;-) They still had the whole bunch of them when I left. I'll probably regret that some day.

For once in my life I had gotten ahead of the curve and was well stocked in all the primers I shoot.  I just hope they become available again at reasonable prices by about 2025!  Roll Eyes

I thought I was in good primer shape. Single shots use large pistol about 50-100 per month. Still have 3000 after two years of shortages.

Problem is new volume shooting disciplines, grandson doing well with Sporting clays. Previous my only shotgun shooting was SxS guns and events. Sporting it’s modern guns & two of us minimum 250 shells per week. Last year he was virtual school & had Mondays off. Signed him up for lessons  that added 100 shells per week.

Then, like every body else in the country, couple old friends wanted to learn how to shoot pistols. Never much of a pistol shooter myself but do know how to instruct & train . Monday mornings club indoor range it’s pistol practice. Have them using .22s first then switching to 9mm & 38 special 25 rounds. Am loading all their ammo low recoil lead bullets. Good thing they are past basics now & I can shoot .22 rifle offhand while keeping my eye on them.

Point is thats a lot of primers

Add was surprised to find Beretta 92 9MM or S&W 38 run fine on small rifle magnum primers, that helps

What's the shelf life on primers?  I shot some a week ago that gave me some hang-fires, less than a second but still noticeable.  These were stored in an unheated garage for 20+ years.

I don’t know shelf life but early in my SS days about 1993 switched to LP & did not mark purchase date on the bricks. Recently a few hang fires or fail to fire, must have been the older primers. Sorted out what looks to be old. Will reserve them for Pistols.

The Large Pistol primers are .006 to .008 shorter in height, your firing pin might not reach deep enough. Small Pistol and Small Rifle primers are the same height and can be shot interchangeably in light loads.

I've shot primers that were forty years old without mishap. These were W-W Large Rifle in wooden primer trays so old they were marked both "120" and "8 1/2".

By 2025 all CF cartridges have to utilize a  'electric' primer ignition and metal spring deployment system (or reduced carbon footprint system)  per the latest Traffic Infrastructure Funding Bill.... Wink

When I typed that I thought that was funny.....now I'm starting to feel that Elmer Fudd "be very careful" what you joke about sensation..  Congrats on the find.

I've had similar. I think it may have been the powder (surplus WC846) rather than the primers.

Nope, mine were loaded with 4227.  Rifles were the left-handed Aydt, 8.15x46R, from 30-30 cases, and Stevens Model 47 in .28-30, Bertram cases.

Cabelas in Edmonton, Alberta have them priced at $Can 119.90 ($US 93.94).

But they do not have stock.

Cabelas in Spokane have them listed at $US 79.99.
