Barrel Tuners?
Nov 22nd, 2021 at 5:37pm
Print Post
Following posting some match pics in Match Results an observation was made and a question arose regarding the use of tuners in the .22 event. What is the ASSRA rule regarding the use of tuners? I looked in the rules updated in 2010 and didn't see anything.
Thank You,
Scott

Me personally I would not complain if someone showed up using one. Being able to read and then to adjust to the current conditions to me would have the bigger advantage rather than a tuner being used.
All though not per the rules we cannot afford to turn anyone away as most groups are actually getting smaller and especially here.

IMHO tuners are not in line with the spirit of the activity. But hey who am I to judge….

Rules are Rules and they should not be broken Scott.
But not saying that I approve of it but where else can one come out and to shoot and to be around such a group. Who also just want to come and to shoot and to be around such folks when they might not actually have somewhere else to go? To be able to go out locally and to enjoy their own passions in life. Being one who has always shot a traditional rifle in Schuetzen Benchrest matches. I have also never feared anything else that I have had to compete against. But even so the rules should still be upheld to be able to hang onto the ASSRA history and the legacy of their own original mission statement.

Here's another thing

We have two RF matches in January and July, 50 shoots off the bench and 50 offhand at 100 yards, where we let anyone shoot any .22RF they like.

Bring your Anschutz or your Ruger 10/22, we welcome you.

Occassionally someone will win with one of those rifles, but usually they find they can't compete, mostly because they don't have the experience we do and they don't practice rimfire benchrest at 100 yards.

What does happened to some of them is that they see just how accurate singlesot rifles can be and they catch the schuetzen bug.  That sends them looking for a rifle (we can usually help them out).  In one instance this has even led to a shooter getting a centerfire and taking that up as well.

We also invite the kids from the Appleseed program to these matches.  We let them shoot at 50 yards and award them separate medals.

Yes, rules are important to keep the playing field even for matches.  However, that doesn't mean that you can open things up once in a while to entice and educate.

Strange folks here keep saying they want to keep the ASSRA and its History alive and well. That is also the intent of the rules so how would ignoring them help to preserve what they have accomplished to date.

When I was Match Director our club offhand  SS matches would allow any Rimfire scored and reported separately. Any sight too. We picked up a lot of shooters that way, converting to single shots later. Personally would not be concerned about offhand shooters using tuners. Distraction from the job at hand, breaking good offhand shots.

CF more restrictive due noise and potential target damage. Lot of 38/55 & 45/70 lever actions though. Found even very good offhand lever 38/55 shooters gave up about 10% score wise, compared to SS rifles.. Some converted to SShot others use the match to practice the 200 yard Ram leg Lever silhouette

Welcome many as possible club welcomes when we possable that’s how we get 25 to line  capacity 32 shooters. Shouldnote we do not shoot ASSRA rules. Due range time demands other disciplines must run shoulder to shoulder relays 9 am start clear the range by 1 pm for modern Silhouette rifle  match. Re Entry & breech seating impossible
