AT times I really appreciated those big battleships off the coast of Chu Lai and Danang. One radio call with a couple ten digit coordinates, and keep your head down. Those 16 inch guns could deliver a very accurate salvo when requested...

Anecdote:
June 4, 2004, we were at a shooting match near Pittsburgh. Match Director came on the PA and announced that "Old Cliff", one of the competitors, 60 years ago hit the beach in Normandy. We all cheered and clapped for Cliff, and he modestly rose and said, "Well it's not like it was MY idea !".
I tell this on D-Day and Veteran's Day every year, as a memorial to Cliff.

With the new projectiles there is talk of bringing back the NJ and a few other BBs. Their range has more than doubled to 60+ miles with even better accuracy. Amazing stuff.
And, thanks to all my fellow veterans, present or gone.
