No shortage of flints here.   There are a couple of places not too far away where I can get all the flint I want.  That's the beauty of a flintlock.

According to the inflation calculator, $1 in 1897 is equal to $33 today, so primers at $1.20 per 1000 in 1897 would be $39.60 per thousand today and that seems to be about where it should be. Anyone seen some for that?

Re-evaluation of the situation

I too, after working 50 plus years, had great expectations of spending
more time at the bench, shooting vermin, and handloading.
Big course correction, the days of shooting all day at whistle piggies and the week long Montana dog town festival, is Kaput!
Like a good dog and a good horse and a good meal, I'm going to miss it all. Still going to shoot dogs and whistle piggies. But it's
going to be a scaled back deal. Couple days shooting dogs, and an
abbreviated piggie outing. When is it going to end??
It's never going to end, prices for components will remain ridiculous,
availalability of everything scarce and expensive.
.256 Win. Mag, instead of the big long range vermin rifles.
The heyday of the Carnival is over.
I blame a lot of this folderol on the greedy money hungry people who severely damaged the shooting industry. It's way too soon to
determine what the shooting industry will throw at us next.
But it will be a very frigid day In hell before I pay 200.00$ for a brick
of SR primers.

Yes $200/K is too high for primers, but, is 20 cents per shot, a lot less than the plinkers spend on Ely 10x.

It all renders down to how much are you willing to pay to play.

And possibly those who also decided to horde prior too.

I am beginning to shoot my longbow a lot more these days.  Probably as much for therapy purposes as anything else.

But, Port Orford Cedar and Sitka Spruce raw shafts have nearly tripled in price since the first of the year.

And, I don't want to talk about the possibility of the GOEX plant closing for good at year's end.  Plants only been there since 1820 or so.

I bought myself a nice air rifle, set up a 10M range in my basement. Exactly the same disciplines of sight picture, trigger control etc. Still shoot rimfire and center fire, just less of it.
I think things will settle down - maybe by next Summer ?

Well, alloy @ $2.50/# for 218g bullets is about 8 cents each, 15g powder @ $30/# is 15 cents each, those are fixed costs; factoring in your time reloading is absolutely laughable.  Grin

Everything is going through the roof. I bought a 1.69 once bottle of Loctite yesterday. 59.00 plus tax and I drove 140 miles to get it. No instructions or set times or cure times on the bottle.  Sad

Case of BP cost me 678.60.  Angry

Greed, pure and simple.  I often ponder who is the shooters/reloaders worst enemy: the anti-gun government we have, or the distributors/dealers who gouge us to the point where we finally have to stop shooting.
If a mfgr doubles prices, they only have to produce half the product to make the same amount of money, and labor cost drops increase even that number.

I have shot more with my air rifle than cartridge guns this year.

Midway currently shows small rifle primers available at reasonable prices.
