When if ever will it end....

I don't think it will ever be the same again but went to a local gun show and a guy had large rifle primers for $200.00 a thousand. I think the world has gone absolutely bat s--- crazy with greed. I will retire Dec.31 from a 36 year aerospace fabrication career and it was my hope I guess beyond hope I could finally spend some time at the range and now the world has turned upside down. Will it ever end...

as the wise men said to the king "and this too shall pass".
However we don't know what that will look like. Have to get back to bartering.
I have no solution for greed.  as I am sure I've been part of the problem. Stay vigilant as opportunities will come. This will help us better understand our folks who went through the depression.
Hang in there.

I've seen them at gun shows for as much as $165 a brick and passed.  But I've also come to the conclusion that  I'll pay the piper, rather than sit home and watch Andy Griffith reruns.  So when I see them at a halfway decent price, I will grab them.  This past weekend I was at a show and saw a brick of Federal Large Pistol primers for $75, so I bought them.  Still twice what they used to be. But for now I figured that was reasonable.

It will never really end, but it will cycle.

This was posted on another forum, it would be interesting to read the whole article to get a better idea of what was going on. The article is a couple years before I started loading. May be someone remembers ?
Quote:
I was browsing one of my old issues of Handloader Magazine (May-June, 1974, #49) and had to laugh when I came across Neal Knox's old column, Lock, Stock, and Barrel. Neal started off with:

"WITHIN THE PAST couple of months I’ve been getting a lot of mail from readers concerned -about components shortages, and whopping increases in costs. Some have worried that this is the result of companies cutting back on production, or allocating a higher percentage of components to loaded ammunition, in an effort to “squeeze out” the handloader.

That isn’t what’s happening. There are shortages on the dealers’ shelves, and prices on some items have spiraled, but the cause - so far as I can determine doesn’t lie in the manufacturers. On the contrary, most of the manufacturers are producing at full capacity."

We tend to think that whatever situation we're experiencing in the present is new and unique and special. It seems we are ever destined to learning the same thing over and over again!

I've always been able to stay a bit ahead of the curve.   Even before Slick Willie,  I usually had a good supply of powder and primers on hand.    I probably have a "lifetime supply" now.   Best way to beat a primer shortage is to have a good shooting flintlock.   But, now that loophole may be closing with GOEX throwing in the towel.

It's tough to not be part of the problem if you didn't stock up when it was cheap, and easy to do so. For those caught short, and desperately needing various components to be able to shoot there are only two options. Pay the price, or don't shoot.
I am always stocking up when I see good prices, even if I didn't need the primers, powder, etc. at the time. I'd rather end up not using it all, than end up caught short someday! I still ask other gun guys if they know of any primers available, even though I have 20,000 of each type of primer I use. If somebody tells me of some available at something close to old prices, I buy it. But I wont buy at these crazy prices asking now. I bought 11,000 large rifle primers in June from a friend who wanted $350 for them. More than I'd ever paid, but with the others asking triple that amount then, I bought them.
I put my name on BACO's "notify me" list recently for Swiss BP, and they showed "out of stock". But less than 2 weeks later I got a email it was in, and I immediately ordered 10 lbs. Then a friend tried to order and was told they only had 3 lbs. I called and was told their computer had an error, and they discovered 13 lbs. of Swiss, so I got it by ordering quickly after the notice.
If companies have a "back order" or "notify me" list, be sure to put your name on it. You don't have to buy it if the prices are too high, but at least you'll get an email, and you can decide if you want to or not.

Unfortunately I don't see the supply improving soon.

U.S. gun sales in the first six months of 2021 surged 15% to 22,243,220 from the same six months last year. This makes it the largest first half of the year figure since sales were first recorded in 1998.

This increase for just this year has surpassed the various manufacturers abilities to keep up with just this new and current demand. It was already struggling to keep up with all of the new firearms sales in the year 2020 not including the prior years.

Nearly 40 million guns were purchased legally in 2020 and another 4.1 million bought in January - USA Today

14 million firearms purchased in 2019, and was called a “record-breaking” year for the firearm industry.

Just chiming in, but I do not think that this is just a US problem. Primers here ( all sizes ) have jumped up from € 28.00 to € 46.00 per thousand. And these are European ones. I cannot get CCI or Federal for love or money. I now cannot get Sierra 168 HBT premium either, but with foresight still have a few thousand that might last me till they are available again. US powders have nearly disappeared off the shelves but European ones are now at the € 110 - € 140 per kilo ( that is 2.2lb and a € is about 1.15 USD) that is a 30% increase. Shotshells are still around € 8 - 11 per 25, so I stocked up.

This might want to be looked at in a more positive way.
The more legal firearms owners that we have in this country does make it harder for the government to take them away.

To put it all in perspective, in the 1897 Sears Roebuck catalog loaded 32-40 ammo was $2.29 per 100, brass was $1.30 per hundred and primers were $1.20 per 1000.

I wouldn't call people paying crazy prices, greedy, but they may not be able to look back on it later, as a wise purchase. The important part to me, is that they were able to make the purchase in such uncertain times.

I watch the local stores, and I REMBER  who's scalping and who is not. The scalpers can GTH when normal returns.

I was also feeling smug owning a couple of flint locks, then COVID caused a flint shortage. Now there is a powder shortage. What is a guy to do? I do have a throwing knife.

But wages were $13/week for 60 hours  Huh
