Correct direction to roll paper patch onto bullet?

I am experimenting with paper patching and am having no luck finding information concerning how the paper should be wrapped for a Ron Smith left hand gain twist barrel for my 45-70.  Should the diagonal point in the direction of the twist or in the opposite direction?

Since the angle of the patch-cut is so much different from the angle of the rifling, it can't make very much difference.   Some may tell you otherwise.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I would wrap opposite the twist. So if it's left hand I'd wrap clockwise as you look at the bullet base. But agree with Chris that likely it wont matter either way.

for what it is worth, there is a pretty good section on direction to wrap in Paul Mathew's book, "The Paper Patch."

I have rifles with right and lefthand twists. I see no difference with the way they shoot patching the same way.

I also cut my teeth on Paul Matthews' book, The Paper Jacket.

He would explain that you want the bullet to shed the patch upon leaving the barrel.  Therefore, you want to wrap the patch in the rotation opposite to the rotation imparted to the bullet by the rifling.

The easy way to remember is that with a right hand twist you roll the patch with the nose of the bullet facing to your right.  For a left hand twist, you roll the patch with the nose of the bullet facing to your left.

I never have had a rifle with a left hand twist barrel, so I haven't tested the efficacy of this technique.  There are 1000 variables.  If you control this variable, that leaves 999!

Best of luck, and let us know how it works for you.

The proper direction is which ever way it is most comfortable for you to get a tight wrap.

Somebody ought to unroll the paper patch on an original factory load worth $50 to see which way they were wound.  Not me though!

The direction won't matter much. The bullet bumps up and keeps the paper tight as it goes down the barrel. The rifling cuts the paper and the paper doesn't leave the bullet until it's clear of the muzzle.
What will have a drastic affect is to small diameter of the bullet and paper to thick. That will leave the bottom layers mostly intact, and while it won't bother accuracy out to a couple hundred yards it will make things go to pot as the distance increases.

Why would the accuracy “go to pot” at longer range If it’s accurate at one or two hundred yards ?
