This is going to be fun. I can not predict where this will lead, and what will come of it. So all you history gurus, aficionados of firearms lore and tradition, feel free to add what you know.
Queens NYC.  Springfield Blvd., Creedmore Rifle Matches, Teddy Roosevelt, The Irish National Rifle Team.
OK, I was filling up the truck with petrol, at a petrol station in Rosedale
NY. What started out to be a 10 minute chore, turned into a two hour
conversation. There once was a very famous rifle range, right down the road from the petrol station.
Springfield Blvd.        Let's do it !

Creedmoor range?  Last time I looked on the internet, it was later the site of a psychiatric hospital.

Mr. Creed sold his 70 acre farm, ( imagine what that land would be worth today?) The NRA turned it into a 1000 yard shooting range.
Then 20 years goes by, not much interest in shooting, so it reverts back to the state.
A nut house, the Looney bin!
So if you have one of those Creedmore cartridges, The Creed + More
(Like a farm) and you get Creedmore.
And there even is a Winchester Blvd. too.

It was Creed's farm, which was a swampy "moor", and when purchased by the state of NY it was first called Creed's Moor. Shortened to Creedmoor by the time the range was completed.
The state of NY gave the National Guard $25k to buy the land, and build the range. Shooting had waned some later when most countries stopped attending, mainly because the US teams dominated Long Range shooting, and the British and Irish said it was too much money and time just to get to the USA and return home losers.
The governor of NY was Alonzo Cornell, elected in 1880. He was elected on a campaign promise to cut state spending, and one of the first things he cut was support to the National Guard to keep Creedmoor open! The governor was also antigun, and refused to allow National Guardsmen to compete in the 1878 match at Creedmoor. They even went so far as to return the trophy from the year before soon after!
The NRA tried to take over Creedmoor matches, but without support from the Guard and NY State, they failed. In 1890 the NRA deeded the land at Creedmoor back to the State of NY, and that was the end of Creedmoor as a shooting range.

I grew up Franklin Square, NY, which really is not that far from the old Creedmoor Range/ Creedmoor hospital (now almost totally abandoned) grounds. My dad worked for the old Hinsch Produce Company and he had a number of deliveries to delicatessens in the area and along Springfield Blvd.  I was his helper and once him about the how Springfield Blvd got its name. I was told by him and few others at one time there was an old rifle range nearby.

Later found out that Creedmoor Hospital was built on the range grounds and if memory serves me and I think it does, the butts were around what is now the intersection of the Belt and Cross Island parkways.
