Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

71 and I live in Oregon. I started out saving money and buying any old .22 pump I could afford when I was too young to drive. Later moved on to lever action Marlin repeaters, which resulted in buying a Marlin Ballard.
That Ballard was my downfall to my levergun interest, and soon I had sold almost all of them, and reinvested in Ballard rifles. Then that expanded to Remington singleshot Rollers and Hepburns, and later other American single shot rifles. So it's been strictly single shots for the last 35-40 years.
I hunt with my old single shots for deer and elk, but haven't hunted the last couple years with bum knees. But I still get to the range near me as often as I can.

I'm 67, livin' in the "rockin' chair" phase of life, still fairly fit and healthy, mighty grateful for that. Wife is 8 years into Crohns disease which limits our travel (including going to shooting events). But we are minutes away from more mountains, National forest, State forest and publicly assessable private timber lands than I will ever be able to put footprints on in a lifetime. Our county has a nice shooting range as part of the county park system near each of the 3 towns in the county. 90 miles of bad (windy, icy, wildlife infested) road to the nearest Walmart. Have a reasonably complete machine shop in the garage to scratch that itch whenever it flares up. Have more single shots than I shoot and more hobby projects than I am getting done. I am and have been blessed.

I'm 76 and living in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. My first single shot was a .410 shotgun. The first rifles that I shot and reloaded for were a Peabody (I never knew how that came to be in the family closet and my dad had never tried to shoot it) and a wreck of a rolling block that I put a 2x2 on for the foreend and built up the hammer with brazing to keep the block close to a reasonable headspace (God protects fools). The first rifles I bought for myself were a low wall in 22K Hornet and a German stalking rifle in 8.15x46R. More have followed;-)

I am 75 and live in Northwest Missouri. I shot NRA Highpower rifle & Smallbore prone until 3 years ago. I am an old phoneman with bad knees. As a break from competition I started shooting single shots. I find beauty in Hepburns, Highwalls, & Stevens. I have just two Ballards. It is amazing what craftsmen could do without Computers & CNC machines.

Kurt, I'm sorry but I had to chuckle at the "old phoneman with bad knees". I had a dear friend that could have been described the same. He said it was because they used to have contests on who would jump off the pole the highest! Super rifle!

83, Colorado for the last fifty years. Built my first muzzle loader as a teenager. Won a third place in the Texas State matches
Good many ML's in college to buy groceries. Learned I could not make the living I wanted as a gunsmith.
Burned out on ML's after serving as State president for two years. Made knives, engraving (never got there), boats, and boots.
Retired and started single shot rifles. Made several actions, rifles, and scopes. Recently sold my larger bore rifles, like loosing your kids.
Slowing down some, Still shoot at least once a month, weather permitting. Hope to finish the striker action 32-40 this winter.
Good run, good people and mentors. Still enjoy it thoroughly. The Ballard is still my favorite,
Chuck

Going to be 76 next month.  Just received my first single shot rifle this month.  A Shiloh Sharps Montana Roughrider, 45-70, 34" bbl.
I have been to the range twice, but it is getting cold and snow will soon keep me in until spring.
I have been a shotgun person most of my adult life, Grouse hunting with my bird dogs across the north east.  Skeet and sporting clays in the summer.
Looking forward to spring!

Froggie I was just sitting here thinking about what I had just posted. I now have 5 Great Grandkids and just actually realized that I am actually getting Old. Up to about a year ago I still thought I was still in my 50's or so and what a Wake up Call.

WHY?   Just because the "clock has struck midnight" some time back doesn't mean a person has to quit doing what he loves to do.  I turned 77 in September and still try to shoot at least once a week, even in the winter.   I'm not out to win any matches, just love to keep the barrels on my originals rifles warm.   You are only as old as you think you are.  Or, "you aren't old until you know what you want to be when you grow up."    I ain't got there yet!  Still, it is sad that there don't seem to be many youngsters interested in anything but exercising their thumbs on digital gizmos.

George a Stroke and Partial Permanent Eye loss is what it is and I haven't lost my interest but I just cannot no longer do it safely in my own Life. Not at all complaining I have been extremely blessed for the last 23+ years of this being a big part of my own life!

Might as well join in here! I’m 77 and began collecting single shots about 25 years ago. As our youngest son has a pawnshop and sporting goods store, I also get a number of other interesting rifles through him, especially if they’re a rusted up mess. I enjoy refurbishing them as much as shooting them. Probably about two thirds of my collection are Ballards, Winchester 1885s, Hepburn’s and a number of Marlin levers.
I just retired about 2 1/2 years ago after a career of owning businesses and politics serving  as a conservative republican. Still living on the ranch, but use it most of the time as a shooting range now!

My turn....Turned 65 and find myself quite shocked to write that and see it, but considering the last few years I'm just happy to be here and finally finding time and workspace to indulge my passion for singles.Got the bug about 30 years ago when I stumbled into making molds and patterns to help bring the 1877 Sharps back to life with Tom and Carmen Axtell. Finally built one of my own over the last year.Gotta play with the big bores while I can still stand the recoil.

My real favorites are Ballards and Hepburns, with a great liking for the Stevens 44 Ideals.

Back in Northern CA now after a few years of being rootless but not sure where I'll end up.At least I have a good public range twenty miles away and mostly good weather to shoot year 'round.

50 years old and in the southwest suburbs of Chicago.
I started collecting military rifles in my late teens then started adding military pocket pistols when I turned 21.
When I was about 30 I met John Gillette of Classic Guns Inc who introduced me to fine British shotguns. My collection transitioned from militaria to English doubles. Then I bought an English Farquharson rifle and my interest in single-shot rifles really took off. Soon afterwards I transitioned again from SxS shotguns to American and English single-shot rifles.
When I moved to Alaska I met collectors/shooters like Michael Petrov and John Wills who introduced me to the custom gunmakers such as Schoyen, A.W. Peterson, A.O. Niedner, Zischang, etc. Because of them I met many more single shot collectors.
In 2016 we moved back to Illinois where I met more collectors and shooters. I have learned so much from every friendship.
