Shortened Remington sight

Shortened Remington sight on a Ballard .22.  Old target rifles are interesting.
2 1/2 inches from the pivot screw to the top of the tang. The base is also shortened and profiled.

I've shortened some aftermarket sight bases to fit Ballard rifles. But I wouldn't do a valuable Remington base. I'd sure buy one someone had done decades ago like yours was Joe. That's a pretty nifty sight.

Very interesting. Now I need a more detailed picture of the wire palm rest made as part of the lever
I always find period modifications by serious shooters interesting.

Me too. It's sorta like tin ware. Soldered on the front of the lever and attached with two screws to the back of the lever. There are plugged holes in the lever also. Who ever owned the piece did a lot of experimenting. The rifle holds very nice on the palm of the left hand.

There are 26 brass tacks in the stocks.  The small ones look as though they held a leather or canvas cover onto the stock. If only this rifle could talk.

Unique sight, on a very unique #3 Joe! I like the whole package! Somebody had good taste in stock design too!

I believe it's a Zettler stock. Not marked however.  The wood panel/knob on the lever is a Zettler feature. No numbers on the forestock. Unique for sure so I'll leave it as is. Those tacks.......   Undecided  Well, it is what it is.

I think you're correct Joe, it does look similar to a Zettler Bros. My Zettler Bros. has a similar stock, but slightly different wooden filler in the #6 lever.

Buttstock and plate from Halps photo galleries. Very similar to my rifle.

Today while using the Zettler Ballard at a silhouette match, noticed screws, tiny screws in the side of the sight staff. Two on one side and one on the other.

Also noticed the breech block was originally a single trigger block.  Someone put a lot of time and effort into the rifle.  Altho the rifle is not marked, I'm assuming it's Zettler bros work.

My portable palm rest worked better for me than the funky yet innovative lever mounted palm rest.

Old neglected target rifles often tell a story murky as they may be. 27 brass tacks along with the E, lead me to suspect that this rifle was once the property of a native American.

The E standing for Chief Eagle Feather? Chief Eagle Eye?
I could hear far distant sounds of war drums as I shot the rifle last evening and found myself chanting hey yey yay.  A pleasant soothing experience really.   Can't wait to do it again.  Smiley

I was infatuated with your clamp on palm rest the first time you shared it, and still am! Wish somebody would reproduce that rest!

You know, Joe, Native American was my first thought when I saw those brass tacks. OK, trivia time, who is our most record holding Native American? Target shooting records, that is.

The first book I read cover to cover was a Jim Thorpe biography. But the letter on the stock is E so it must be for Chief Eagle something er nother.

Cost of having the parts cast to replicate the palm rest was way high when I finally found a foundry willing to do it. I'm still looking and just got off the phone with another.

Not yet. Had considered it.  Easy enough to have a dozen or so sand cast.
Did talk to a foundry in Warshington today.

Conversation was positive and the rep said they had done castings for a gunsmith in their area before. Sent pictures and weights to them today. Hope they can do them for a reasonable fee. If they can I have some buttplates I'd like done also. Plates you cannot get otherwise. Rep also said they can make patterns so that shinkage will not be an issue, also said they have an alloy that can be polished to look like nickel.

The clamp on rest is very handy when shooting antiques that we don't want
altered.

Shipping makes me very nervous. To have a rare original part lost in the mail is a nightmare I'm not willing to risk. I'll drive the parts over if things go well. I have property to maintain thirty miles from the foundry so that makes it convenient.

Joe,

I would like to buy one of the palm rests if you find someone to cast them.

I've still got the burn scars on my feet from my early 20's working the pouring floor at the local foundry!

My experience was in high school metal shop.

I never got burned but our teacher poured some left over aluminum into a pipe.  Pipe had moisture in the bottom.  Aluminum blew up under his safety glasses and into his eyes. He looked bad for a while but didn't lose his sight.

I worked in the ingot plant at an ALCOA smelter. Make a mistake there and you get vaporized. Your whole self, poof and yer gone!

Mine was in a steel foundry when I was 21 years old. Third day of work I showed up for swingshift and was told to go home as they'd had a 20,000 lb. ladel break a bail while heading down the floor hanging from a bridge crane. The result was hot metal pouring out as the crane operator tried to get it to a pit to control the spill. In the process three men were covered in molten steel and killed instantly!
I should have quit that day, but instead I was back at it three days later, and stayed there 7 years. I saw an opening for an apprentice electrician at the foundry, and got off the pouring floor. Once I turned out as a journeyman electrician I quit, and went elsewhere.

Me too...First job as a pattern maker was in an aluminum foundry in Southgate, CA back in the 70's.There was a line of furnaces aong the eastern wall of the building I was warned to stay well clear of as the guys out there were not as careful as one could wish.

Sure enough one new guy went to the water cooler and on the way back to his station decided to toss the paper cup of water into an open furnace to see what would happen...Killed him and three other guys were badly burned.I got out of there pretty quick and went to work in the model shop at Northrop.
