Shortened Remington sight

Shortened Remington sight on a Ballard .22.  Old target rifles are interesting.
2 1/2 inches from the pivot screw to the top of the tang. The base is also shortened and profiled.

I've shortened some aftermarket sight bases to fit Ballard rifles. But I wouldn't do a valuable Remington base. I'd sure buy one someone had done decades ago like yours was Joe. That's a pretty nifty sight.

Very interesting. Now I need a more detailed picture of the wire palm rest made as part of the lever
I always find period modifications by serious shooters interesting.

Me too. It's sorta like tin ware. Soldered on the front of the lever and attached with two screws to the back of the lever. There are plugged holes in the lever also. Who ever owned the piece did a lot of experimenting. The rifle holds very nice on the palm of the left hand.

There are 26 brass tacks in the stocks.  The small ones look as though they held a leather or canvas cover onto the stock. If only this rifle could talk.

Unique sight, on a very unique #3 Joe! I like the whole package! Somebody had good taste in stock design too!

I believe it's a Zettler stock. Not marked however.  The wood panel/knob on the lever is a Zettler feature. No numbers on the forestock. Unique for sure so I'll leave it as is. Those tacks.......   Undecided  Well, it is what it is.

I think you're correct Joe, it does look similar to a Zettler Bros. My Zettler Bros. has a similar stock, but slightly different wooden filler in the #6 lever.

Buttstock and plate from Halps photo galleries. Very similar to my rifle.

Today while using the Zettler Ballard at a silhouette match, noticed screws, tiny screws in the side of the sight staff. Two on one side and one on the other.

Also noticed the breech block was originally a single trigger block.  Someone put a lot of time and effort into the rifle.  Altho the rifle is not marked, I'm assuming it's Zettler bros work.

My portable palm rest worked better for me than the funky yet innovative lever mounted palm rest.

Old neglected target rifles often tell a story murky as they may be. 27 brass tacks along with the E, lead me to suspect that this rifle was once the property of a native American.

The E standing for Chief Eagle Feather? Chief Eagle Eye?
I could hear far distant sounds of war drums as I shot the rifle last evening and found myself chanting hey yey yay.  A pleasant soothing experience really.   Can't wait to do it again.  Smiley

I was infatuated with your clamp on palm rest the first time you shared it, and still am! Wish somebody would reproduce that rest!

You know, Joe, Native American was my first thought when I saw those brass tacks. OK, trivia time, who is our most record holding Native American? Target shooting records, that is.
