Totally incompetent range officers

I am majorly pissed that after getting up before 6 am and arriving at my local range at 7:30 which gives me plenty of time for setup before the allowed 8 am start, There was a sign on the gate saying range closed until 1 PM for logging.  No notice on the web page or in the online club calendar.  This is an ongoing issue that I am going to work to escalate now that I have a sympathetic board member who I emailed directly this morning who said that he had just been notified himself.  Last year there were some power lines down 100 yds from the range entrance as you approached from the north.  I went around the county road closed sign and made it the 3 miles to the lines across the road before turning back.  The next day I found that a long detour would allow access from the south.  It was like this for a week with ZERO information on the range website.

The range home page has a Twitter update section.  Here is the current info from May 2020.

I like the facilities as it is unmanned with a nice 200 yd range, s separate restricted rimfire range with 150 yd capability.

If only they would use some sort of communication tools to inform members of calendar changes or more importantly range closures.  They seem to manage to send out a ling every month to the club calendar, why could they not send a quick email with changes.

Just venting

Jack

By chance I recently had a similar situation at my current gun club also Jack. I had tried to sign up for "long range orientation" which is basically orienting members how to conduct themselves when shooting the 1,000 yd. range, as it shuts down all the other ranges between the firing line and impact area.
But I was told, "You don't need to sign up, just show up at the time it's scheduled for."
So I drive the 16 miles to the club, only to be told when I got there that the range is closed for road work! I told them I'd checked the online calendar a few days ago, and was told I need to check the day I'm heading out, in case the schedule got changed.
So two weeks later I return again to the club, after checking that morning, and there's 3 or 4 guys waiting for orientation. The person conducting the training tells us if he doesn't get 10 guys, he's leaving, "as it's just not worth my time to do it."
Now I'm even more irritated, and I went up and quietly told him I didn't appreciate making numerous trips out here, and just whose time is more important? His or mine? And if the number is so important, then why not have a sign up list so they not only know how many will be there, but they can send an email telling us if it's on or off!
So they ended up with 8 guys, and he told us he was going ahead, even though he didn't get the magic 10 guys. Lucky for him, as I'd have been at the next board meeting with a major axe to grind if he didn't.

When this takes place one needs to step up to the plate and to take over and run the matches themselves. It does not do any good to complain and to have to rely on somebody else when one could do a better job themselves.   I have done that myself for 7 years and as assistant there after that. But I am also not willing to do it any longer as I now just want to come out and to shoot. After helping everyone else out for 23+ years now. If the matches happen to go away it no longer has anything to do with me. If somebody else does not choose to step up and to take over from here. Not at all complaining but often times when one gets older and now has his own health issues. It just time to back out and to leave it to somebody else if it happens to survive or possibly not?

Have to agree with John.  Clubs ranges are mostly run with volunteer labor (and management).  If you want it done better, do it yourself.

Has nothing to do with matches. Has to do with people not coordinating these work projects, or not updating the schedules to keep the membership informed.
