Info on new rifle - Rem Rolling Block w Stevens bb

I just bought this rifle on gun broker. It was a buy it now and I could not pass it up and had no time to research it. It is a marriage of a very heavy Stevens 32-40 octagon bbl 1 inch across the flats. It is interesting to put that bbl on the much stronger rolling block action verses the  weaker Stevens action. The action appears to be the "Swedish Rolling Block" in Layman's book page 128. There are no markings other than what you see. It is in excellent condition. I am showing the Gun Broker listing as the photos are great. Any info appreciated.

I hope Val sees this thread.   I think I see a Pope scope cut on your barrel for the front mount.  I suspect the rear one was removed when fitting this barrel to the roller.

However, I'm not the authority.  What say you Val?

Val indicated that he was going to "take a break" for a while.  I also thought those cuts looked like Pope's scope mounting cuts.

Joe

Interesting rifle, have you looked under the forearm for any markings on the barrel?

Judging by the position of the barrel stamp and your single pair of Pope scope mount cuts, your barrel was drastically cut back, perhaps more than once, before being fitted to your rifle.  Considering how rare those Pope scope mount cuts are, in my opinion that "modification" was most unfortunate.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

The Pope cuts were used on other maker's barrels beyond Pope. I've seen them on factory barrels, and assumed the owners had possibly purchased a pair of Pope scope mounts and had their barrel cut to accept his rings?
I have a Schoyen Ballard cut for Pope scope rings, but also has regular scope bases too. And at one time it got cut for dovetailed scope bases too! Seems some owners over the years couldn't make up their mind about what scope mounts they wanted. I repaired the dovetail cuts, but kept the D&T holes, and of course the Pope cuts.

I also have a Zettler Bros. Ballard with their modified Win. barrel on it, and it's got a pair of Pope's bases designed to allow his ring system to be mounted, and has Pope rings with a Stevens scope. Only pair of Pope scope bases I've ever seen, as others all had his scope ring cuts.
