Hoppe's has been around for a very long time, and seemed to work quit well until they made changes to possibly compete with upstarts. At one time or another I sold just about everything out there, and tried just about every home brew trying to find the Holy Grail. Hoppe's probably will still work well if one follows the directions to dry patch the bore followed up with oil. Nothing that I have found does it all, remove carbon buildup, jacket fouling, lead fouling and whatever else ails the bore. The OLD Hoppe's did/does what it was/is designed to do. I have firearms that were cleaned with Hoppe's for sixty years, and the tubes look today as they did then, like new. If and when I run out of the OLD Hoppe's I will possibly switch to something else. Many of the benchrest shooters that I have known, use a concoction made up with GM upper engine treatment, and it worked very well, and they are a picky bunch. If the holy grail is found, I am sure we/you will hear about it, Till then, I will stick with what has worked best for me, and suggest you do the same.

I used to use Hoppe's, then I tried Kroil, then"Ed's Red", then Sea Foam, then Ballistol.  I'm sticking with Ballistol; I even like the smell!

Seems that Julian Hatcher had an opportunity to have Hoppe's Nitro-Solvent No. 9 (along with a number of other cleaners of that time) analyzed for a study, and he provides its "probable" composition in approximate percentages from his old notebook.
