OK, I just left my rifle in the basement with Hoppies in the bore. Presently, I'm setting by the fire, drinking a little Crown. Damn you guys, now I gotta go down stares and read the bottle. Hope I don't break my neck. If I do, expect to hear from my Wife's lawyer.

I'm a newbie to Hoppe's #9 compared to some, as I've only used it for a bit over 50 years. I bought the biggest bottle they had the last time I bought it, and I'm still using the old formula.
A couple years ago an old friend asked me to sell a bunch of reloading supplies he had, along with gun cleaning supplies. In the bunch were a half dozen of the old small bottles still in their old orange boxes. So I bought those for myself, and sold the rest of the stuff for him. So I'm fixed for more years than I'll be around.
Every once in awhile I open the old bottle and just take a big sniff, just to get a hit of the good stuff!

For me the only good thing is the smell and the same as smelling a just shot shotgun shell when I was still a wee lad growing up. I haven't used it for well over 23 years and  gave what I had to somebody else and changed to something better than for my own use.

My own bottle of Hoppe's No. 9 is plastic, has a bar coded label, and is 20-25 years old.  The instructions state that one should alternate patches soaked with Hoppe's and dry patches until the patches come out clean.  Then one should saturate a patch with (Hoppe's) oil and push it through the bore.

In short, even back then, leaving a coating of Hoppe's No. 9 in the bore, while not expressly prohibited, was clearly not recommended.

Finally, the solution being "corrosive" is not mentioned, but the label does state that it contains kerosene.

I've been using Balistol. It has a smell but not a pleasant smell. All it is is mineral oil and a petroleum distillate.  Works fine far as I can tell. Not what I would call a solvent. Oil.

Doubt it would have the same effect on my X as the Hoppes had.

Didn't say anything was wrong with it just preferred to change to something better than.
But I do still love smell of it! Myself and my Brother grew up using it and we were taught how to clean and to care for our own firearms while still in Elementary School. Grandpa had a real nice ranch to Hunt on and we grew up doing just that at a very young age.

I cannot help but dripping a little of my old bottle of Hoppe's around my gunroom once in a while. stirs memories of 70 years of shooting.

Maybe your stuff isn't as good as good ole Hoppes #9 Bore Solvent in actual fact.  Maybe you should switch back. Your scores might go up.

The "old" Hoppe's odor was from nitrobenzene, which was likely only added for its smell.   It is a somewhat toxic compound, likely the reason for its removal.

Ballistol is common mineral oil and t-butanol.   The characteristic odor is from a trace of butyric acid (an impurity in the low-grade butanol),  the compound which stinks in rancid butter.

Rust-inhibiting compounds need to be quite non-volatile, so more polar molecules will be better.   Synthetic motor oils are very good in this regard.

Joe_s  With all due respect, I am just now catching up on this post, and must bring to your attention, that I stated, whatever has worked for you to keep on using it. If it hasn't worked well, then I would recommend a change. If it ain't broke, why fix it? if Hoppe's is broke, then fix the situation. One can spend a lifetime trying all the commercial and home made products. Find one that works for you, and move on.  Respectfully yours   Krag

That's it, rancid. Ballistol smells rancid to me.

Joe if memory serves me right the old number 9 has been banned in this the republic of China/ Opps California and now probably being the same as all of the other Dictatorship's. Maybe the smell alone actually does have a direct relationship and a direct effect on climate change?
