Grand Slam,
38-55 BMW:    Ballard/Marlin/Winchester.
Cartridge originated by/in the Ballard rifle,
Marlin bought out Ballard-Hence the Marlin-Ballards.
Then Winchester "commandeered" the ctg and
called it the 38-55 Win.--- ever since. Brass is even now headstamped 38-55 Win.  Misnomer.....
So, I give credit to the originators and the copiers

SSShooter, oh for it to be so easy. Regarding bullets I gues I did not make myself clear, what I meant was there a particular bullet shape that performed better at 200 yards than at longer ranges.
Mick, there is a fellow competitor that campaigns a .40-65 at our matches I値l get some bullets from him when I test fire the doctors 40-65. I have found the BACO molds from JIM to be very good molds and very cylindrical with runout measured in tenths.
Arnie, thank you clearing that up with a bit of history.
Cheers Richard

Grand slam.
For what it's worth my target load that has worked the best for me has been 61 gr of PP Wano, a .060" LDPE wad, no compression, no neck tension. This sets the bullet out just far enough to kiss the rifling in one of my rifles, in the other, I have to seat the bullet a little deeper, this results in light compression of the powder, which has not affected accuracy in any way that I can tell.
I'm offering this info so you might like to try it as a starting load, and experiment from there.
Hopefully this will give you a good starting point from which to proceed.
Cheers
Mike.

Although I like the .38-55, I agree that the .38-50 is a good choice too.  With the right twist you could use the rifle for more than one purpose.  I bought a highwall in .38-50 with a Ron Smith barrel from an ASSRA member a few years back.  It shoots very well.  Cases are easy to form from .30-40 Krag.  I full length size them and form them with cream of wheat and a small charge of Unique, then size and expand them.

Well........ I can tell you what has not worked in my current 16" twist barrel is the JIM409400C4 Money bullet. However, it worked like a champ at 200yd in my 14.5" twist barrel (both are 30" long Grn Mtn). I've got a couple of shorter/lighter GG bullet molds on order. One in the 335gr range and the other in the 375gr range (can't say for sure until I've cast with them). One is a flat-nose elliptical and the lighter one is a Postel. I'm also looking for a Saeco #640 (370gr) to try. All in search of a lighter 40cal load for chickens.

Chris, Shooter, thanks for that info. I知 looking forward to trying out the rifle that I知 building for my doctor. It has a RKS gain twist bbl fo .40-65 will beg and borrow different bullets for it and see how she shoots.

Richard I don't know what the chamber dimensions are for your .40-65, but if it's anything like a Shiloh Sharps ( approx 0.050" freebore followed by a 2.5 degree per side taper ) then it might really like the Saeco #740 bullet.  Funny as it seems, my Saeco mold doesn't even drop a perfectly round bullet, but surprisingly it shoots extemely competatively.

At shorter distances (under 300m is my guess) it doesn't really matter that a bullet is slightly out of round. With our soft lead bullets the bump-up from firing makes them perfectly round almost immediately.

i understand that the .32-40 was/is a very accurate cartridge for 200 yard bullseye work. i would imagine that the reduced recoil of this round would disturb the action and attachments, bbl and stock, less than the larger calibers. this may be part of the reason out traditional rifles are very accurate with this round.
best Richard

So I致e been plotting my next rifle and am also planning on 200 yard BPTR rifle. I知 looking at going 32-40 or 38-55. Still considering a 32 Miller. I will be shooting off of cross sticks from a solid position. I look at this as benchrest on my belly and want utilize an inherently accurate cartridge  Cool
