I buy quite a bit of steel weekly, sometimes in the tonnage range sometimes a little less.  When Trump placed the embargo's and some of our mills came back on line, there was a spike but it went back down some.  This time, the increase dwarfed what happened earlier.  I purchased a large order in February - about 2 tons of 3" plate, made the same order again the last week of July, price was triple.  I wasn't pleasant to any of my suppliers, didn't make any difference - alloy round bar, 1.5", 2", 2-1/4, and 3" has nearly tripled in the same time... welcome to my world.
The administrations matter, all their little things make huge differences, seen it before, several times.

Thanks GT, good to hear from someone who is actually dealing with the price of steel in the now! As my son has told me, he is in the house building arena, that he has to sell a three hundred thousand dollar house for five hundred thousand just to cover material cost. And the game just started!!!

All raw material prices have risen this last year.

Below is a graph of a Steel Index. This is a average of publicly traded companies involved primarily in the production of steel products or mining and processing of iron ore.

This is for the last 12 mos.

Thanks Joe, that's interesting info.

I got in a discussion with some folks and they didn't believe me when I said the material went up that much...  at my source it has.
Rant begins...
Here's the rest of my story - I don't have a steel mill in my back yard, in fact, not even within three states so shipping becomes an issue.  We are a bit remote here even though we ship a product for pennies that's an established condition - but it's changing.  We have an interstate that rolls through here but the commerce going out of this area is limited so empty trucks make no money.  What does this do for the cost of goods?  How about the cost for fuel increase that gets it here? How about the drivers and shortage there of...  Now, even though we are rural, we see folks with the same opinion the rest of the country is seeing, not quite the pool to begin with. They can stay home and collect more without having to work so we have an employee shortage and those that do work want more.  We're seeing an influx of folks that move in here because their current employment allows them to work from home so they don't help the issue, in fact because they do work from their homes, they've hurt us.  Housing is an issue, build new? that's an issue- as are the normal goods and services because with the influx there's more demand, what a cycle... the pandemic is a good scapegoat.
  end of rant.

Supply and demand. With the recovering economy demand is up and supply has not increased so prices go up. Its called capitalism. We are running 6 machine centers. As busy as we've ever been. Stock holders want profits. Name of the game.

BTW - I see that Green Mountain has increased their price about $40 recently. Oops........ make that $60. If I recall correctly, they are a sub of a steel mill in Alabama. Have not checked the other barrel makers.
