Repriming Navy Arms .41 short rimfire cases

A couple people asked about how I reprime the original type rimfire cases.  I just reprimed nine recently manufactured (1990s) Navy Arms .41 rimfire shorts and took a few photos.  I use the Prime All kit that is about $20 (Google it).  These Navy Arms .41 short cases were pretty clean since they were loaded with smokeless, so I just brushed them out. If they were really dirty, I might used the ultrasonic cleaner for them. After sizing and expanding the mouth to take the heel bullet, I cleaned out the rim recess. To do this I took a straight pin and bent the tip 90 degrees. This let me scrape out any debris from the recess.

With the cases clean and ready to prime, I mixed the 4 powders in the kit according to the directions. Then using the small scooper (the other end is the large scooper), I put one level scoop of priming compound into each case.  The directions say to add a little alcohol or acetone to each case to make a slurry. I put some acetone in a glass eye dropper bottle. I put 2 or 3 drops in each case, then mix it with a cut off Q-tip.

At this point, for longer cases I'd put it in a drill to spin the case. This slings the slurry out into the rim recess. But these .41s are so short, that it is hard to get them in my drill chuck. So I just used the cut off Q-tip to pack the compound into the rim as best I can.  After this, they are set aside to let the acetone evaporate.  After they are dry, I'll take the Q-tip and try to pack any loose compound into the rim. Any excess compound will be dumped back into the storage cup for reuse.  Tomorrow I'll load these with 12.0gr of Old E 3F and a 123gr heel bullet.

So that's about it. Really, it is quite simple. A few months ago I made this video of testing it out with a .38 rimfire cases. Check it out.

Cool! I need to try this someday. Anyone want to sell a bunch of fired 25RF cases?

Do it!  Its a pretty simple thing to do. The trickiest part is getting the compound into the rim. Spining it is how it was originally done - centrifugal force. Ive done it with an electric drill on longer cases. But Im now working on a way to hold it with a locking shell holder.

We finally got a break in the rain, so I stopped at the gun club on the way home from work. I've been itching to try the reprimed and reloaded Navy Arms .41 rimfire shorts. I had 10 of them, they all fired Smiley  Trying to shoot them across the chronograph was another matter. I was only able to get one to register. It came in at 535fps. I shot one of the rods that hold the sky screens in place too. It got bent pretty good Wink

One thing I particularly like about your .41 RF reloads is that, unlike your hand-made reproductions, they don't turn your derringer into a mini-blowtorch.

Also nearly 60 years ago I shot my Remington Model 95 with both Navy Arms remakes and a box of what were likely among the very last Remington-loaded "originals" that my local sporting goods store still had on its shelves.  My target was the open door on a circa-1950 refrigerator, about 35-40 feet away.  As I remember, the door was nicely dented, the Remingtons dents the more noticeable, but no holes appeared.   So despite what some authorities thought, my opinion was that a shot across a poker table could easily kill.

Despite what the internet scribes may say, I think the .41 would be deadly at card table distance on soft flesh.

Speaking of dents, this is the chrono sky screen brace after being struck by the errant .41 rimfire bullet  Grin

One of my earliest lessons in Ballistics and stopping power involved comparing 22LR with 22 magnum, a car door and bitter disappointment.

The 22LR rounds poked neat little holes in what was probably early 50’s steel left in the Arizona desert.

Expecting great carnage, or at least a hole I could stick a finger through. Imagine the disappointment when all the Hollow point Magnum left behind was a dent. Angry

A very inglorious start to a lifetime of bullet testing.
